Help choosing a fixed-blade camping/survival knife?

I am going to defend Gerbers good name here

If you are doubting the LMF II's durability, just watch the destruction videos

This guy repeatedly pounds the knife through wood, concrete, and even plate steel:eek:

There was no handle malfunction at all during the beatings and he eventually decided to cut the handle open to figure out why it was so strong.

And remember this is a sub $100 knife, even in the rare event that you break it, it's $70 to replace

.

Hehe....Gerbers good name. Thats funny.

Stroll on over to www.ratcutlery.com and check out the warranty. And remember...it is a 100 dollar knife online. the sheath is excellent too.

Cut a Gerber in half with a blowtorch and see what they say when you send it back to them.

RAT knives are very cool! "Defending Gerber's good name?" I didn't know there was a good name to defend!

Gerber is pretty crappy, it always was... Even Bear Grylls use Gerber knives.::D

Say what you want about Gerber, but don't knock Bear Grylls!

Only after you can drink the fluid squeezed from elephant dung can you talk smack on the Bearmeister!

No Busse recomendations here? I would think the ASH1 or the still available Skinny ASH would great.

Agreed with the Busse's, but he is wanting the price to be around $130. Look at the for sale by individuals: swamp rat/busse/scrap yard sub-forum, you can find some swamp rats and scrap yards for around that price and they are tough as all get out, with great warranties too.

Don't be afraid to get a Mora and use it. I bring have many great outdoors knives to choose from, and usually bring along a BRKT Bravo-1 or a Ratmandu, but always pack my carbon steel Mora when hiking or hunting. I use the Mora 5 times more than the other knives, and sometimes I feel like I bring the other knives along just to give me an excuse to use them.

As far as nice rigid knives go, look at the Falkniven F1 and BRKT Highland Special. Either knife is a simply supurb outdoors blade in the "general" category you are looking at.
Benchmade makes a D2 Drop Point Hunter (BM190) in D2 that is an extremely nice knife. I use it for all of my small game butchering.
Benchmade also makes the RANT. It is a very nice knife for around $50, don't let the 440C steel fool you, it's an amazing bargain.

RAT knives are great, but the RAT-3 and TAK are the only really useful one of the bunch. I've owned one or more of the following: RAT-3, TAK, RAT-5, RTAK-II. The bigger RATs are a little to big and the sheaths, though very nice, are huge.

How about one of the fine offering from JK knives. Like this one. 4 inch 01 steel, killer sheaths and great wood. Right in your price range. Go to the Maker's for sale section and check out some of our own top knife maker's Like JK. DP and Richard. Also Kyote makes some great knives and I am getting one from him very soon. It's nice to keep our knife money right here on the forum. There are many more great knife makers here, my lack of money has just kept me from trying any of the others.:D

Another vote for Bark River and Fallkniven. I've had an F1 for a few years and its been great. Around $90 online. I just received a Bark River Bravo-1 and while I haven't used it yet, it seems like a real winner. Around $130 online. The 4.25 inch blade on the Barkie seems like the perfect size to me for a field knife.
