When choosing a machete, consider what you are going to be cutting. The steel tends to be about the same on non-walmart machetes with differences in thickness. Handles vary a lot. People talk about Ontario machetes as being so great and the ones I have used were blister machines. I have found the wood handled Condor machetes to be very good and if you need to sand off a little, no problem with an electric sander. I have settled on the Condor El Salvador as my choice for a "general use" machete. I really like the short choppers like the Pack Golok and Village Parang (12-14" lengths). Handles vary a bit, but the poly handles I have messed with have been good, but I prefer the wood handles because I can sand them a bit without any major issues for me. I might add that the Condor leather sheaths are excellent and worth a strong $20-$25 by themselves.
The Condor Viking may be a good choice for you or to have available since it is a long machete for reaching into those multiflora rose bushes and wacking away. The parang shape (sharpened edge on top) helps to grip stuff and move it away from you.
Generally I think a person who uses machetes with any regularity should have short, medium, and long lengths to choose for a particular job.
