help choosing small knife: VERY picky...

The 310 has rather thin scales. Adding a clip might be difficult.

Nope, it is easy, look how I did it:

Did I read your mind or what? If you do get the new WH, please post a picture of it. It's a new knife, and it's not obvious how substantial it is. Manufacturer specs are one thing, user pictures are another.

Noted...

I've been around the net, and stumbled on this site, which is really well done.
http://www.pvk.com/

Their "CA Auto" section is awfully enticing. Stuff like this keeps popping up and grabbing my attention. And even this one is only a 2.4" blade, and at that weight you'd never notice it. Wish I had 250$...

Still between Protech Runt, Microtech Mini UMS, that sweet candy of a WH lockback, and these new contenders are making me think...Autos are neat, and 2" or under blades of nice steel are enticing for the same price range.

Thanks for the continued discussion!

EDIT: If I do end up with this knife, I'll be sure to post up some good pics. Maybe even pass it around...not sure how that works (I'm new here) really. You guys have been pretty helpful.
That's nice stuff on that Benchmade clip...You're not helping me narrow these down! :D
In the mean time, here's a cool pic of the Kestrel (it looks bigger in most pics).

I'd suggest the Spyderco Spur (or Executive, they are pretty much alike):

Or you could consider the Spyderco Dragonfly:

Both are strong knives and have great steel(s). The Dragonfly is tip up carry, while the Spur is tip down.

I've got a post in the wanted section.

I'm also looking at older model Spydercos:
The mini Dyad, the Copilot, and the old model native.
I'm still looking for a Mouse, or a Pegasus but I doubt I'll find one.

Thanks to all who have helped, and keep the opinions coming. :)

If you're willing to go a little bigger I would say look no further than the Benchmade 773 with DLC coating.

154cm steel / black coating
Axis lock
Aluminum handle
Pocket clip
2.75" blade, 3.5" closed

I'll second this excellent suggestion. I'm not a big aluminum fan, so I hunted down the Limited Edition with the green/black integral G-10 and the uncoated D2 blade. It's an out of the park gent's knife. It's not only small enough to not get "big knife!" sheeple eyes, it's elegant, rock solid, cuts very well, and has great indexing/hand fitting ergos for a knife this small.

I own a 940CFD2, a 921, and a 705BT. But these days if I'm not packing heavy with the 730CF, the 770 is what you find in my pocket. The aluminum version is only $150 full MSRP, it net-streets at right around a hundred. And there's a carbon fibre model if you really want upscale weightlessness.

Oh dear Lord yes... I found that site yesterday and spent nearly two hours browsing... nearly shat myself about six times... I've never seen some of those knives that cheap...
