help convert my boss, a knife-fearing individual...

CS Voyager Medium Clip point. Old style lockback but very utility format. A bit more manly should be the tanto style.
And also good third on EDC.

If your price range was a little higher, I'd recommend a Benchmade 31 Bali-Song. But I guess it might be out of the question since you're in California.

biogon,

Don't bother getting the guy anything. Take the hint for what it was. He just warned you that he does not want you to bring a knife into the office. If you want to continue working there you better learn to play along. Bringing more knives into the office (inc. his gift) will only make things worse.

Biohazard, you're from Hopkins, aren't you?

Are you working there or a student? I'm an undergrad living on campus.

If he scared of that little thing, I'll show something he would REALLY cry about!:D:D:D

I agree with not2sharp.
I wouldn't do or get anything for him, yet.

But if you want to "show him the light", just watch him.

If he's struggling to get something open, drop him some very settled hints, and open the item with your "new" knife you got him (I think a nice buck will do, since he's scared of "locks").

Or you could just sit there, watch him and laugh. :p

Whatever you do, just make sure you do it low-keyed and become good buddies with him first.

Do it too much and you might see my mom at the unemployment burea helping you find a new job.:(

Try a plain edge Spyderco Delica or something similar on him.
If he's into "gadgets" as he seems to be, the opening hole & the utility will hook him.
Beware- I have had some BAD JUJU concerning knives @ work-

Well, so I did it.

Just to keep y'all updated:

I gave him a CRKT Tighe Tac, small, plain edge. Tiny (2.6" blade, 3.4" handle) but elegant and still has some of that "tactical" feel.

I -almost- got him the CUDA EDC, but I saw this at the very last minute and the bolsters & black Zytel really was quite attractive.

The fit and finish is amazing on these puppies! Geez... for $50 it's a steal. Where else can you get a bolstered knife for $50, much less with a satin-finish???

He was very pleased, I think. Went over well. Tip-down safety, strong lockup and great closing retention in the detent ball.

And the reason I didn't worry about pissing him off about having "knives in the office" is that I'm leaving the company. *laugh*

Too bad it's AUS6... for him, it's a good fit, but if it came in bg-42/s30v/cpm440v, even 154cm I'd definitely have to spring for one for me. Even with AUS6... I might get the larger one. Mmmmm...

I think I may yet have a convert. :)

By the way, it's a great gift knife.

I'd suggest a CRKT 14K Summit Series knife...
Since it uses both a liner lock and a safety lock it will help make your point about locking on a folding knife.
The smaller Pike's Peak or Mt. Shasta won't set you back much either... under $25.
