I have a custom order and the guy wants the words "Keep it Texas" etched along the side of the spine of the blade, just above the bevel. I was discussing wood choices with him, a professional hunter/guide in Texas, and suggested mesquite just to keep it Texas, and he liked that phrase so much I'm now looking for someone who can put it there. Anyone recommended? Or an estimate of what it might cost? I told him I'd look and pass the cost on to him without any markup from me, but I don't even know what kind of numbers to tell him. Any suggestions?

You could have stencils by Ernie make you a stencil that said Keep it Texas, then you could build the etcher from Chris Crawfords site. I think the stencil would run 30 bucks and the etcher cost me 60 to build. But guys have made the etchers for much much less. There's even tutorials on how to make your own stencils if you wanted to try that route. Here's an example of one I hade made for Denver City Texas Fire Department

i was hoping to avoid buying more stuff until i at least make enough to pay for the stuff i already have. I may go the etcher route eventually, but not yet

Contact Ernie Grospitch, the stencil will cost around $35.00 and he can probably give you a name of a knifemaker that will etch it for you! 1-407-568-5438

Having it engraved would be the best bet and easiest.I have had a fewengraved for different folks. Usually costs between 10-25 buck to get done.

You could coat the side with finger nail polish and then scratch in what you want to say. Then etch it. You can also use something else to coat the blade. Just about any type of felt tip pen will work.

I hear you about not wanting to spend more while you are gettin started up. If you decide you do want to have a stencil made ill etch it for ya.

I get a local jeweler to engrave for me sometimes. IIRC, costs me about 75 cents a letter.
