Help Design Around the World Knife

T-Mag:

The Ralph Turnbull designed T-Mag is a "slip-joint" (non-locking) folder that uses a "rare earth" magnet located above the pivot pin to keep the folder "locked" open and closed.

Blade - a 3.0" hollow ground S30V
handle - titanium liners brushed (matt) carbon fiber scales

Maybe Kelly & Taz will want to show a pic?

I can post a nice pic from the A'Dam show if allowed?

That would be ok Ted. Was the A'Dam proto blue G-10 or carbon fiber?

The production version is carbon fiber.

 It was CF if I remember correctly. :)

ok, it seems to me that the picture posted takes into account those that wanted a dragonfly and to a lesser extent the terzuola. not a perfect atch but ballpark. It also covers those that wanted an overlay of some kind.

I like the idea of H1, that way we don't have to worry about corrosion. Also, IMO, I like the idea of a leaf blade shape.

So my idea would be the above knife, with a 2.5 leaf shaped blade of H1. :o

I would rather have a wharncliffe

I'm also fine with that. The Turnbull design with a wharncliffe blade of H1.

The H1 doesn't hold that great of an edge, but the wharnie shape will make it a breeze to sharpen anywhere.

Here's another idea. Since H1 work hardens over time, it'd be interesting if Spyderco could test the blade before it went out and then test it when it comes back to see if there's been any change.

So what about the handle. G10? Which color? I still think we should go with a relatively bright color that's non-knife person friendly.

Sal, which colors would be the easiest?

If we make the piece in Golden, which is the plan, H-1 would not be used. More than likely we would use S30V.

Colors depend on what we have, or, if it's going to be a "one off", then we can grab any color.

I'll see if I can get some pics posted of the current version of the "T-Mag", & maybe the "urban".

I'd be ok with S30V if it is easier to make the knife in Golden. It also has a nice feeling for the knife to be made at Spyderco's homebase and then shipped out on its journey, but I'm sentimental so don't listen to me.

The wharnie bladeshape should make any steel easy to sharpen.

What do you guys think about sending a little benchstone out with the knife? It would add to shipping and be one more thing to worry about, but it might be worth looking in to.

The benefit of a one off is that the knife is unique and special for this project. The benefit of sending a production prototype or a model that's going into production is that it gives a mini-sample of how people around the world feel about the model and nothing really special needs to be done to make the knife, except for engraving. People can also pick up the model when they see our super duper extensive Spyderco Circles The Globe coverage! Or after they handle the knife on its adventure.

But I don't know much about knife production, so I may be totally wrong.

I'd like a bright color G10 that Spyderco's never used before if we are going the "one off" route. Something fun and snazzy that non-knife people won't be intimidated by. Bright green, Orange, Yellow, something.

If this is going to be a production model, I guess the handle material depends on what Spyderco thinks will sell the knife the best. But I still think it should be bright and harmless looking.

That's also acceptable to me.

Wharncliffish blade is certainly a very useful style...love one too! :)

I'll go with the colooured scales idea - I particularly (sp?) like Case's orange G10 & it looks more 'rescue' than 'military'.
Wharncliff / sheepsfoot are good, or maybe the D'allara (sp? again) profile?
