Help!?... Elmax or S35VN?

Don't over think it. S35VN is very similar to S30V. Just add to cart, and click check out. let's go, let's go, let's go! :D

I respectfully disagree.

S35VN is a great steel, holds a decent edge and is easy to sharpen and polish.

S30V offers better edge retention, but it's a pain to get it to the polished edge that really make this steel perform at it's best.

S30V is not user friendly unless you're compulsive about edge maintenance, but once you get it there it will surprise you.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread! Great stuff here...

I have been considering S35VN as my go to stainless but after reading this Elmax may be my choice.

On paper they look very close.

If you cut thhat strawberry with this one it wouldnt have stopped half way through ;)

Lol ,honestly best fifty bucks i have ever spent on anything knife or knife related. I dont use my folders for hard use though as it is pretty thin

Elmax.

In all honesty, S30V, S35VN and Elmax are all very good steels. I wouldn't turn my nose up at any of them.

I'm not sure what Kershaw's heat treat numbers are but I had an XM-24 in S-35VN run at CPM-S35VN (60-61 HRC) and I was very surprised to find it a very good "hard use folder" I was kinda worried about it but that's a good treatment imho. :)

61-62 is pretty high up there for that steel I believe. According to CrimsonTideShooter, a 0550 Blem given to him by Thomas was tested at 59.5Hrc

Yes, very high. I was referring to the S35VN by Mr. Hinderer for his XM folder and not the collaboration knives. I had it a point too high. From his site - CPM-S35VN (60-61 HRC) Sorry for any confusion. :)

Yeah, I knew you were talking about your XM's HRC. Even at 60-61 that still seems quite a bit harder than most are running it. I have no doubt at that hardness it is performing very well. I know initially from watching CrimsonTideShooter's videos that Spyderco and CRK seemed to be running the steel too soft and he had problems with rolling his fairly obtuse angled edges. Maybe he can chime in and give some insight on the topic.

Of course, I also recall CTS saying that ELMAX is just a bit better than S30V. Not 100% sure about that statement, though.

No doubt S35VN at 60-61 is a very good steel. I'm sure it's toughness at that hardness is just about all one would need in a folder or anything along those lines. But, ELMAX has held an edge for me very well also. I even chopped/batoned my way through 1" of braided hydraulic line rated at 3,000 psi. I had literally no damage to the edge, not even small fractures or chips. I was very surprised. Don't want you to think I was out to destroy my 0561, but I am a very curious person by nature. It of course did show a little bit of wear. Even better, this was a few weeks after I got the knife, and I did this with ZT's factory edge, which was in all honesty the sharpest production knife I have ever received. I have an Edge Pro with Chosera's, but still haven't touched up the edge after the almost 2 months I have had it. I just checked my arm, it's still shaving sharp on every bit of the blade, and still push cuts phone book paper.

I will admit also to not having used a ZT in S35VN. I have tried Spyderco's quite a bit, and CRK's to an extent, but I haven't used them anywhere as hard as my ZT 0561 in ELMAX. But it's safe to say at this point, with Bohler and Carpenter hot on the trail of Crucible, blade steel has never been so good. And honestly, either steel the OP chooses will be very good.

But, with 0551's going for $300+ on auction sites and the like, you may as well pick up a 0560 or 0561 and get ELMAX and a host of other improvements. And at $260 it's a steal.

Thanks so much for all the great info guys, looks like i'm getting the 0551 with the Elmax, going to pick it up next Tuesday! cant freakin' wait!

I've read that a few times about s30v and wondered about it. The only knife I have with it is my Ritter Grip and I love it. Holds an edge great, responds really well to just a touch up and gets crazy sharp.

Since my 0550 in S35VN arrives tomorrow, I'll vote for that. If I could have gotten a decent trade for the 0551, I'd have had the Elmax. All of that behind me, I really don't work a knife hard at all, and will never know the difference. I cut open a box or cut some tape...or...top some strawberries.

Since you've deided on the Elmax (the right choice, imo), I say go for the 0560 or 0561 instead. Don't get me wrong, I love my 551, but my 0560 owns it in every way! My pocket hasn't seen anything else in the 5 or 6 weeks since I got that bad boy!
