Help fill out my planned Busse collection with a chopper, neck, and camping?

Soulrack223's boss jack and buss muk. The kultellus and sar3 are notably smaller.

I like those knives. :)

While everyone should probably pick up a LBNMSHBM for EDC tasks, if you plan on doing a lot of chopping I much prefer Res-C handles, it does make a difference.

My pick would be the B11.

Since I've gotten into backpacking and hiking, I like to keep the weight down, so other than trying to loose weight from my slightly fat ass and gut, I'm downsizing my gear as well. I was quite delighted that the Basic 6 LE was "accidentally" made a little thinner than planned. As it will soon be my go to fixed blade for excellent overall survival knife size. I'll most definitely get a Basic 10 whenever it's offered to be a lighter weight chopper. As for smaller, I haven't bothered yet since I can't EDC them due to Los Angeles vs. CA State assbackwards fixed knife laws. So I stick with folders for anything shorter than 5". I have a few nice ones. :)

My 0.27" FSH is just too heavy to justify carrying it in my pack, when I could carry extra food and/or water instead.

But it's just so purdy, I don't know if I can part with my precious FSH 2008SE when it becomes redundant after getting a Basic 10, 11, whatever. The utilitarian and minimalist Basic line is really appealing to me.

The SAR 6 is a great chopper for it's size and weight. B-11 and other Res-C handles are the most comfortable of the Busse handles.

Other people have recommended some great knives, you wont go wrong with any.

Chopper: As much as I love my CGFBM I would recommend the lighter and less expen$ive B11, or the B10 thats coming out sometime this year.

Bushcraft: muk, cabs

Out of curiosity, why is the CABS so generally praised and recommended? There are several other knives of similar length and/or design. And why so over the regular BS?

The boss street was incredibly thick at it's edge and tip, while it's the same form factor it's a completely different knife in use. It's much closer to being a prybar than any kind of slicer. The cabs is one of the very, very few busse production slicers. It has a thin stock and incredibly thin edge for what busse usually produces. My edge came out to .025" (measured just behind the cutting edge), where most busse's are .035 or higher. It's weight is also really low at 6.2oz.

As an overall package it's also one of the very few compact designs from busse combat. The CABS doesn't have waisted space between the scales and the edge in the form of a choil or extended ricasso, and it doesn't have a ton of pommel sticking out or extra scales for 'multiple grips'. It couldn't be made more compact without removing the talon hole gaurd. It's also simple with no flair, but still has style. Theres no blade catch, no serrations, no swedge, just a simple drop point and handle.

I don't have a side by side comparison of the CABS and BOSS street, but I do have the boss street next to a mini sus scrofa - one of the few knives in the busse catalog with an edge as thin as the cabs. as you can see, the BOSS street is not a slicer by any stretch of the imagination:

and thats not as bad as busse gets, this is a tank buster next to the same mini sus scrofa:

my only compaint with the cabs is that I wish it had been made to be 5.5-5.75" instead of 4.25". The extra length would have made me want to keep it. at 4" it was just to short for most of what I wanted to do with it.

Did most of what you wanted to do involve cutting English muffins? :p
Well, I like it, I've pretty much decided now what I'm going to get. Thanks a ton for all the help.

Final verdict: the new light brigade battle mistress etc. that looks like is coming out soon and a CABS.

Cheers, everyone.

Because of it's slicer nature, a bit part of it's job was food prep. I found that I constantly wanted just a little more edge when cutting a variety of foods including onions, potato's, lettuce and cabbage. As a camping knife I would have wanted more length if I ever intended to baton with it, though I probably would have relegated it to food prep and carving.

CABS absolutely. Just got mine and it is just perfect for an EDC and general all purpose smaller knife. The blade length, the thickness, and the handle length is just right. Also it is essentially NM also with everything rounded off. The thickness with the convex makes it super sharp. I couple this with my NMFBM.

At one point, I was carrying a Esee6 (like a BJ) with a KZII but the Esee6 was slightly too big for the smaller task. It's good if you can carry one knife only such as the BJ.

If I can carry two, I highly prefer the CABS with the NMFBM or KZII.

I have an ESEE6 too, and when I was comparing its measurements with the Boss Jack, I found they were pretty equal. The BJ's supposed to be my replacement/backup for the ESEE6.
I was actually planning to carry all three, but the CABS is a lot longer than it looks in pictures. It always appeared under 3" to me. What is it, a 4.5" blade? Maybe there's some overlap between the BJ and the CABS.

If I recall correctly it's 4 1/4"... There isn't as much overlap between the two as you might think, if you isolate the CABS to shaving and carving wood, fuzz sticks and food prep. If you start using it to baton smaller peices of wood, you'll find yourself relying much more on the CABS and Chopper, and not nearly as much the BOSS Jack. The BOSS Jack is nice for batoning smaller wood when you don't want a 2lb knife, and the wood is too wide for the smaller cabs.

I've gotten to where a B11 or KZ2 and a boss jack is what I'll carry for fixed blades, and then a thinned out Kershaw stockman for food prep. It helps keep each knife isolated in it's task set. if I can ever get garth to respond to the 5.5" CABS request, I will probably start carrying that as the main fixed blade.

Find a Basic 11 on the market...or wait for the Basic 10 to be released. If you don't have to have INFI...the SYCKO 9-11 looks to fit the bill.

Wait for the Basic 04 from Busse, it looks like a great knife. Or...get a SYKCO WarDog to fit your bushcrafting needs.

As for neckers, the SYKCO's are still available in store.

NMFBM looks MASSIVE... should I add that I was hoping to not have to carry much weight around? :D

Can't find any details on the LBNMSHBM...

It has not been released yet. Light Brigade Nuclear Meltdown Straight Handled Battle Mistress. It will be epic, with an 11 inch blade if I remember correctly. Should be pretty light for a full tang knife (that is the point of this series).

If you are looking for power to weight, Basic 11. It helps that it is also a pretty darned good deal (especially if you got one at original cost).

The Killa zilla's are not light by any means. I don't think they are any heavier than the NMFBM's. I have the KZII and it is heavy to lug around.

I do like my cabs for a 4 inch bushcraft, general purpose knife. I just love it to death. I have a Muck for skinning.

BAD is a nice light knife. My EDC. If it was choiless, it would be perfect. A thin choiless warden would also be so stinking cool!

I had my eyes on a Skeleton warden for a light knife. Still might be a good option, but the BAD keeps me from picking one up. I sold my GW after getting and using the BAD.

I EDC the Skeleton Key in my pocket, but as soon as I get a kydex sheath for it, it's going around my neck...
