Hi everyone! I posted this thread on CandlepowerForums asking for some knife recommendations and I got a lot of good response.

Here's what I started the thread with...

I'm looking for a legal knife to carry for protection while hiking.

The blade should be small enough to be legal with a handle that facilitates a good strong grip. A easy quickdraw holster, probably for a belt.

I wanted to have a false sense of security that if a mountain lion attacks me or someone else, I would have enough courage to slit its throat or crush its skull. I know it's a 1/1,000,000 chance to see one let alone be attacked by one and add another 1/100,000 chance to draw a knife and do something with it... but hey it helps me rationalize starting a new hobby of collecting knives

Let's not break the bank on this first one. A good solid tool. Maybe collectable even.

Thanks for reading.

One knife that looked really nice to me was the CRKT 2760 Chugach Range Pro Hunter.

What do you all think about this knife?

Can you all recommend any others?

Thanks :)

what is the largest legal blade length you can carry?

By the way, I do not think that your question is unreasonable. If you are not allowed to carry a firearm, my thought is that any weapon is better than no weapon. A slim chance is superior to none at all.

How much are you looking to spend?

If you can go to the $100 range for fixed blades, take a look at some of the Bark River models, they are awesome utility blades and some models would make good fighters as well.

The Becker line of fixed blades by Camillus offers some tough knives for very good prices (around $50).

There are some sweet folders out there that don't cost an arm and a leg, like the Spyderco Endura, Benchmade Griptilian.

There was someone in Vancouver Island who killed a mountain lion with a pocket knife .He lived because his blood coagulated faster than normal ! They stalk and attack from behind .Wear a football helmut and neck brace .THEY crush your skull !! ..A Cold Steel Trailmaster is recommended by those who hunt boar with knife .Boar knives should be 8-12 long with strong point and substantial guard .A BK-7 would be ok.

Hello cromag. Nice to see another CPFer here :) IMHO a fixed blade knife would suit you best for your intended use. Alot of BRKTs would suit your needs. THey are very well made and reasonably priced. As for the legal lenght, I believe as long as youre in a hunting/camping ground, any length would do. Just do anything crazy like wave your knife in a group of people or act menacingly :D

In days of old, when there were still a lot of tigers around, Indians (the ones in India :) ) would sometimes wear a hat with false eyes painted on the back - the tigers would be deterred if they thought you could see them coming from behind. Or maybe the eyes on the back of a person's head would just skeeve them out. :D Apparently it worked!

I guess you could wear something like that. People will just think you're an idiot, like young college students that wear ridiculous Dr. Seuss hats or whatever stupid affectations they indulge in these days. But you'll be safe from cougars.

LOL! Great idea! I bet it will start a fashion trend - heck, you could combine it with a vest & run spikes down the back of it to impale the mountain lion if he jumps you - kinda like Chronic[what?!?]cles of Riddick...

Buy yourself a good fixed blade of your choice. Blade length should be 5-7 inches long. I don't know the blade restrictions of your area, you will have to determine this, aswell as if you are willing to comply with the regs. Carry a folding locking knife aswell just in case you need backup.

Anyways carry the knife attached to your belt where you can reach it. During a surprise cat/bear attack your knife is useless unless it is where you can reach it. Belt and sholder carry is best, and the worst thing you can do is store it in your backpack.

Maybe just purchase this guy and name him "Knife?" ;)

Favorite backpacking knife- Fallkniven survival F1
Solid, nice sheath, dependable, small but mighty in a survival situation and holds an amazing edge.

MikeH: Not sure what the largest blade length I can carry while hiking in CA but I don't really want a big obtrusive blade stapped to my belt while hiking :)

Here's an excellent article about animals and pepper spray, written by a Phd.
USGS Bear Pepper Spray Research

According to the paper, pepper spray is a far more effective deterent than firearms.

Apparently California Law limits the legal size of pepper spray cannisters to 2.5oz which is definately less than the typical animal deterent sprays.

Fransiscmv: Way too many Bark River choices for a novice like me. Please point out a couple that would be good for lion fighting ;) Same with any other lines.

mete: People hunt boars with a knife!!??

kukula: Thanks for the Welcome brother! Google doesn't bring up much help on brtk. Any good links? :)

TorzJohnson: LMAO that's great if you swear it's true. I'll be painting some betty davis look-a-likes on that back of my ballcap :)

kbog: Nice looking blades. Thanks! How do they compare to the CRKT 2760 here http://www.crkt.com/prohuntr.html

Paddling_man: LOL I have a dog. She's an old black lab. Desert for the cougar ;) I don't believe in having a pet dog in an urban enviornment for protection. Way too much liability. I think dogs should be submissive to ALL people. period. They are companinions and bring a lot more pleasure to their owners and all other people than they do protection. Just my 2c.

TLR: This one seems like a nice knife. I'll have to find more details on this one :)

... I need an excuse to buy a Bob Dozier like Custon Whittler or Toothpick here So much to learn with this new hobby :p

Thanks to everyone for your great replies. Keep 'em coming!

I couldn't agree more! I was just having fun as I googled images for "mean dog." I thought the pic was so funny I saved it for potential later use as an avatar!

for my money, against animals ( if legal) there's only one a Fairbairn Sykes

Cromag, check out the barkriverknifetool.com. Lots of selection out there. I have just ordered the gameskeeper. From what I have read here, its a tough knife thats an all arounder. Ranger knives are also good accordingly. :D But if you wanna spend more, you can go custom, or maybe a Busse? Its on my must have list :p

Nothing is more detering than a .45 slug in somethings brain.

I would highly reccomend you getting yourself a gun.

If you want a good knife for hiking id reccomend a nemesis arch-ally- if that is too small then a swamprat of some kind.

Youd ahve a hell of a bad time knife fighting a bear.
