I’m in the market for a handforged no frills hunting/user knife. Would like to find a maker that is well known for top notch heat treat and blade performance that is willing to make something that is rather plain looking. Seems most mastersmiths are more into art knives that I’d never actually use. Someone that prioritizes edge performance and blends that with a usable design in a 3-4” knife that would carry well. I’m having trouble finding makers that specialize in what I’m looking for. All help finding a Bladesmith is appreciated.

I might be able to help you out. I have made several knives that might meet your criteria. The photo below a a sample of my typical EDC. If you're interested, we can customize as much or as little as you like.

Feel free to send me a message here, or at runningbearsteel@gmail.com, if that's easier for you.

Are you set up to test Rockwell hardness and heat treat to certain hardness? I’m interested in a 52100 blade at 60-61 Rockwell with a visible hamon line.

Other than some hardness files, I am not equipped to accurately test hardness. From what I understand the equipment can be quite expensive, and not something I cannot justify for my shop. I have madeba few blades from 52100, and my heat treatment protocols are sound. That said, 52100 offen hardens in the mid to high 60s. Are you absolutely certain you need a blade that hard? Perhaps a steel like 80CrV2 might offer the toughness you're looking for with a bit more ease of resharpening. Either way, a hamon shouldn't be a problem. Let me know if you would like to proceed with your custom project.

I don’t know if his books are open but John Doyle makes some of the nicest knives you will find. Everything about his work is exceptional.
