I am looking for help finding a knife that fits the following criteria:

fixed blade
4 inch blade (could settle for 3.5 or 3.75 inches)
black blade and handle
sheath can be positioned for vertical or horizontal carry
a trainer version of the same knife is available

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the Nimravus is close but a 4.5" blade. Trainers available, can be had in black blade, black handle, with a versatile sheath from the factory.

There is also the SOCP dagger, but that doesn't sound like what you're after really since its purely for stabbing things. There is a trainer for it though.

Cold steel does a lot of trainers for their models but I'm just not familiar enough with their line up to suggest anything.

Where's the last place you remember having it? haha joke sorry

I think you are going to have a hard time meeting your requirements. Fixed blades that have accompanying trainers seem to be larger knives. Fighters.

4 inch fixed blades are typically for recreation/utility.

I take it you want this as a dedicated self defense blade?

Nice call! That's the only one I see. And I think he does want something "dedicated stabbing/SD." Otherwise, why the importance of a trainer being available? I'm not a mind reader though! :D

Fair point! He's going to have a hard time finding this one if he is looking for an all arounder.

There appears to be a couple Strider trainers out there, including one for the 4 inch bladed DBL.

If we are talking purely self defense then the CRKT Hissatsu fixed blade would fit the bill. Comes in all black and there is also a trainer available. Designed by James Williams so I trust it could function quite well in that role.

Its got a 7 inch blade. Not the 3.5-4 that the OP is looking for.

Thanks for the responses. I live in an area where it is illegal to carry knives for self defense or knives with blades over 4 inches. However, working in the maritime industry and being "on call" I need a blade that I can always have with me so I don't find myself onboard without it. I would have been happy with the knife below, but they are currently not making trainers.

Buy 2 of what you want.
Then Just get a cheap stone (if you don't own a grinder) and take the edge off yourself. You will lose some weight, but the difference should be negligible, and unnoticeable.

BTW
1095 isn't the best of steel choices for a mariner. Even with a coated blade. I doubt the uncoated edge will be able to handle the regular exposure to the sea air without getting ruined.

I think Esee might have rust issues in the sea, it is the only brand of fixed blades I own though, how about getting an H1 fixed? If you really need a trainer that narrows down your search leaving great knives out

Hi, Thanks for the idea. The same thing occurred to me this morning.

Thanks for the tip. This won't be a work knife. I want a straight edge handy for the time I hope never comes, and someone gets a line tangled around their ankle. As such, I will be able to keep it oiled and well maintained. I keep a Spyderco Jumpmaster in my regular kit, but want to have something on me at all times so I never get caught on a boat without it.
