Help finding an EDC

The Delica and Endura (and Manix) are manual opening and have no flipper, so a safety lock is very unneeded.

I absolutely agree. Of course an inquisitive child will be able to open them if they get their fingers on them. And in that regard an opening assist knife - even with a lock - strikes me as as even more dangerous for kids because it will suddenly snap open on them. But that might be just my personal impression and my personal dislike for those type of knives. In general I would second what has been said before: kids aren't stupid. My girl is 4 years now and by now she knows she's got to be VERY careful with mommies and daddies knives and is not allowed near them without supervision. I cannot imagine a Delica or Endura accidentally opening on anyone since they aren't assist openers but of course weird stuff happens all the time. If you wanna make sure they don't open too easily you can always tighten the pivot screw a bit. Both are very good knives for the money and there's no additional mechanism on them that can fail or go haywire. Just plain old manual opening with a sturdy back lock.

Also agree on the Opinel. Get one, just in case. They are lovely knives and very useful to have around. They age well and should be up to any regular every task you set them to.

I would second that from my own views, having an assist or an auto around a kid, whether it has a lock on it or not seems a LOT more dangerous to me than having a regular opening knife.
Off the top of my head I'd go for something like people said of either tightening down the pivot so that it was difficult to open or a SAK, (multiple blades in there that even if they do get it open they have a slim chance of pulling out something sharp first, depending on the style)
But after hearing the suggestion of an opinel I don't think you'll find anything that is better for what you want than that, it combines what you think would keep your kid safe (locking closed) along with things that I would think would keep a kid safe (not being an auto, having a more traditional opening style)

Very good feedback from everyone....I appreciate it.

By "work capable", I simply meant something with a bit more beef than a gentleman's folder for heavy work.

I believe what I'll end up doing is keeping the bigger work knife (with or without a safety) in the truck and use something smaller (w/ safety) for
the everyday stuff around the house.
In light of the overwhelming sentiment, I agree that my best precaution will be to maintain extra vigilance in keeping a knife out of reach.

Dagon (and others): I remember seeing the Opinels a few years back while looking at woodworking tools, but never gave it much thought
other than thinking it was "neat".
I really appreciate you bringing it back to my attention and, whatever else I may get, you can bet there will be at least a couple of these around in
my possession. Aside from everyday tasks, these will make GREAT shop knives for marking, cleaning out joints, etc....
Best of all, you can get entire sets of them for tremendous prices! Maintenance won't be a problem, as I maintain various other
cutting tools and actually enjoy that aspect of woodworking.
I'm very happy with the suggestion of the Opinel.....Thank You!

Checked out the videos, Dagon.
Nicely done.....very helpful. Thank you.
Beautiful knives, I'm in love with 'em!

I always liked Dagon's reviews on Opinels (and his other reviews as well), I'm sure they will finally convince you to get one and give it a try.
As for hard work, these knives have been used for a long time (and by many people) to perform more tasks than you could think of. Also, their ring allows you to secure the knife in the closed position, which, as you may have noticed in your search, is a pretty uncommon feature, even in modern knives.
Just try one. You will be surprised to see how much time it will stay in your pocket, with a good blade to use, and less worries for your kid.

The Kershaw E.T. can be locked closed.

Dekz,

just checked out the ET. That's a very interesting design and function.
Very cool. Thanks for the heads up on it.

maybe im insensitive but i assume you manage to keep your 2 year old away from the kitchen knives ok. whats to prevent you from absentmindedly leaving your folder open defeating any lock that there may or may not be, or for that matter having the kid unlock the lock which in case of kershaw and sog designs im familliar with are not kid proof. a kid can likely unlock the knife as easy as he can open the blade.

my advice would be to keep it in your pocket or in a locked drawer.

This is exactly what I was thinking!! Keep your knives away from kids and buy one YOU like--------I keep a Delica (re-profiled) in my pocket all the time. The ideal EDC for me!

The Manix 2 won't open if you drop it, at least on carpet. I tried it out, dropped it from 10 feet onto a rug. The spring on the BBL is really beefy, and helps keep the knife blade stowed. You have to get it past a certain point, otherwise it will pop shut again. I can snap open some AXIS locks without even touching the lock or the studs (just snap the knife vertically downwards, and they'll deploy), but the BBL is a bit more secure. I'm very fond of my Stag Arms one in FFG S30V. It's a fantastic knife. If you like the looks of it, I think your 2-year old would probably be plenty safe, at least until said child gets old enough to start learning about knife safety.

Another option would be the BM 470. S30V blade, will lock in both the open and closed position. Need to add a little cash to your original budget, but I think it is worth the money.
