I am trying to find belts online for my new sander.

it's a belt/disc sander with 4x36 belts and 6" wheels

i'll be using it (at first) to strip finishes and polish blades to a mirror shine. I am utterly clueless as to what i should be buying

can someone tell me what i need and where the best place to get it is?

i don't know if i need to start with 400 grit, or something higher or lower, and i don't know if i need to go to 3k or if 2k will get me a good polish

i'm a total noob and plan to eventually get to making my own knives, but i'm at the very bottom of the learning curve

First, get used to the fact that your backplate will wind up curved, getting a flat grind will become a real pain on those machines. If your particular version allows for a ceramic glass platen to be glued in I'd do it. I have a 4x36 Hitachi with 8" disk and it's my biggest complaint with the machine since it quickly reduced its utility.

Getting to your actual question though. Trugrit.com offers a variety of belts for it. Not a ton, but a variety. The problem last time I looked was that the selection is heavily biased toward wood working belts, since that's what those machines are generally built for. I recently found that some home depots carry zirc belts in 4x36, but nothing fine like you're after. Good for me, since I sometimes use it for roughing handle material to shape and I tend to forget to stay stocked, but it's still not going to help you much. I think the finest I saw was 120grit for that size.

If you want to mirror finish, read up on buffing and safety with buffers. There's definitely a right and wrong way to do it.

I can't help with sourcing quality belts in that size, but are you certain of the size? 6" wheels doesn't seem correct with a belt that length. I think one or the other is off???
