Help Finding New SHTF Knife...

I really like Becker knives. Plenty of sizes and weights to choose from. The BK7 or BK9 might be just what you're looking for.
The ESEE knives are pretty cool too, although I avoid the models with the silly skull logos.

On a personal note, I'm a bit relieved to learn that when SHTF finally happens, it'll happen in Eagle Mountain Utah. :)
Here in Raton, New Mexico, we're a bit more casual. The entire east coast could be over-run with zombies, and we'll shrug our shoulders and go about our day. Maybe catch the highlights on CNN. ;)

It's 1.25" short and coated but I'd recommend an esee 6. Strip it and call it a day!

All you need to strip the BK7 is some citristrip and tape to block off the areas you don't want stripped. Maybe $15 investment for the citristrip, aluminum pan and tape, $70 or so for the knife, and if you want micarta another $30 I think. That would be way under the $200 mark.

Really though this SHTF mentality is problematic. Fantasizing about murdering people isn't healthy...

"..intimidating, combat first, utility second.."
i would say something along these lines
would be acceptably portable and heavy duty enough
to cover all bases.

I've been looking for a long time at many MANY knives and have not found something that fits all my requirements yet. So, I thought I'd bring it to you all to get your thoughts.

Here's what I'm looking for:

7-9" fixed blade.
Satin (no coating).
Under $200.
Under a pound if possible.
And it needs to be intimidating.

This would be for a grab-and-go, SHTF situation. Combat first, utility second. I'm looking for something that will intimidate an attacker, than dispatch them. ;)

OOC, what does "no coating" have to do with "combat first, utility second", or being "intimidating"?

Get a big Bowie. I bought this old Western USA Bowie from a member a little while ago.

I find large knives unintimidating, sorry.

Kabar and Beckers can be stripped of thier coating fairly easily, you don't need to pay anyone.

I like the idea of the stripped Bk7.

The KA-BAR Large Heavy Bowie is another fine option with a point.

Standard kabar USMC or Tanto, or the Fighter model work also.

All really great knives for things other than making no one scared of you.

While I find the idea of someone needing an "intimdating" knife rather sillly, if someone was coming at you with hostile intent with a big knife, you wouldn't be concerned, you'd just think "oh look an angry man with big knife" and be totally unconcerned? I guess if you're packing a gun I can see your point, but hell, unless you're packing a better weapon yourself, someone coming at you with hostile intent just carrying a Recon 1 or an Endura would be pretty intimidating to most people...

This isn't prac tac. But to clarify, I have much more fear of a small shiv than an excessively large blade and we'll leave it at that.

To repeat, I am much more certain that I wont be making it out alive against a small blade than if Dundee decided to clear up my understanding of what is and what's "not a knife"

I've willingly disarmed several large blades without hesitation from random people just for show, I'd feel much more like a deer in the headlights against a smaller faster instrument of death.

The same mindset that makes me unafraid of random people volunteered for demonstration, not truly wanting to hurt you/hesitant, is want makes me feel confident face to face with someone who chooses to carry and show a very large blade. I'll assume that he's more talk than bite and subconsciously, he won't be attacking with the same murderous Intent you see in a prison stabbing even if he did want to attack genuinely. In other words, bring it on..

Back on subject, the knives I listed are serious sugestions and quality stuff.

On a side note, if we were living in some Post-apocalyptic wasteland and I saw a Bk9 on your hip, I'd be much mire prone to admiring hour gear rather than to question malicious intent, as I'm sure most people here would be.

Have you tried Mantis?

Everyone seems to be going towards something big and wieldy but I tend to agree with stv. You don't need something capable of chopping down trees as an anti-personnel knife. If that is your true intent for this knofe, why get a utility type knife? Why not get a *GASP* weapon? A Karambit would be mich more intimidating than a Bowie- to me anyways. Or some sort of double edged something or other, think Gerber Mk I. Heck there are plenty of reproduction MK3 trench knives on the market these days that would also serve some as a utility blade.

camping trip tested 3 knives hoodlum, rat6 ot 7??, and well made chineese made damscus.

damscus blew away the other 2 due too be heavy and blade shape. we chopped and battoned a lot. better know how too sharpen a blade, daily, if the shtf and you have just a 1 knife.

i am trying esee, or something like tops? etc next since i was disappointed in both the onterio and buck

Daggers are where it's at for killing. They were invented for killing, do their job well, have been used in slaughtering hogs for centuries, and if you point it in my direction the situation just got very serious as I know what your intent is without doubt.

I would be very afraid of a dagger type knife without questioning your intelligence whatsoever.

Bad idea.
Dangerous assumptions.
And, most importantly, what happens in a martial arts demonstration is not grounds for basing your approach to real life.

Esee6 with the sharpened spine its under $200, fairly light and you can strip it for a couple bucks

i agree for a shtf knife do not skip, to be honest i am still working out the details but...... damscus:

pos: natural saw tooth pattern with use
neg: very non-rust replent grease solves that or fat.

pro: custom shapes cheap too fit you, you can buy a few and sell off the bad ones on fee way/

neg: you got know the makers, i bought hundreds and .,..... more. i buy from a few and still get bad ones, i got refinish some i got here out too sand too true finish.

good luck for a novice stick with known brands, stick with the higher end stuff like esee (i have not tested but i have randals), or other recommended knifes.

finally learn how too sharpen off any rocks, remember soft sandstone vs limestone vs granite vs concrete block or brick all can be made into a kick butt shtf sharpening kit.

Daggers look intimidating but double-edge presents danger of cutting self in cqb.
How about a hissatu or recon tanto?
