I would appreciate any help finding folding and fixed knives with nice wood or wood inlay grips....maybe rosewood, cocobolo etc. Unfortunately, i only ave about $150 or less to spend. The knife itself has to be merely good....i just like the look of nice wood on knife

folders: 3 or 4"
fixed: 4 or 5"

thanks in advance, Bill

Although they are alittle shorter in blade than you are looking for, the fixed-blade Benchmade 190 Drop-Point Hunter (3.90") or 180 Outbounder (3.75") are two excellent choices, and either are well within your price-point at a $105 list for either one.

Sounds like a Benchmade 705-02 with bubinga wood inlays to me. It has what I think is an upgraded axis lock, D2 blade steel that shines in its satin finish, an aircraft grade aluminum frame, and bubinga wood inlays. I have heard some nay-sayers talking down the bubinga (aka african rose wood) because it come smooth but not stained or varnished. Stoopies! This wood becomes radiantly brought to life when oiled with human contact.

Overall, it is very pretty, very tough, sharp!

They may be a little scarce because of being limited edition and all, but one can be found new for your price. I got mine from newgraham and could not be happier.

Wow, interesting coincidence. I can't wait to see what you find. Mine is #44, which one did you get? This knife inspired me to get an Opinel and whittle and sand the handle. Since owning my 705 BW, I no longer have a desire for a wood inlaid small regular sebenza.

Hendrix is difficult to get a knife from unless you catch him at a show, but I do like his knives.

If you want to get about the best priced custom, flawless execution and extremely well made, then you need to look at GenO Denning. I've known GenO a long time, and he and his wife Cindy are the best to work with. Give him a call. You can visit his web site at www.cavemanengineering.com.

My BM is 75/200. The other person's link to hendrix knives is awesome...great looking knives....but is ATS 34 steel good ?
whats a small wood inlay Sebenza go for (not that I can afford it)?

Those slip joint knives, do they lock open?

ATS-34 is a great steel, if you search for info here you'll find tons of it. Its not one of the more modern super powder-steels, but it is very well-respected.

a small wood inlay sebenza could cost you about $400 new, I think.

slip-joints don't lock open.

Look for some Delta Z knives.
They have good wood,
the company is out of business,
also look at Boker's line of knives.

I could not find the knife, but someone picked up a cocobolo handled fixed blade at the atlanta show this weekend and posted a picture that really (REALLY) impressed me. Could not find it in a search, though.

Do you mean this?

Hendrix #11 in satin finished ATS-34 cocobolo handles (US$70)

Vincent, if you have any more of those hendrixes or if your friend has second thoughts, please, I'll buy that knife off you....y'know how I feel about the hendrixes...

I do remember - wish you had asked me - I could have picked up one for you at the Blade Show.

(and my friend has already taken that knife)

However when I left the show on the last day - Sunday - Wayne still had a cocobolo handled #11 knife left (very similar, but obviously not exactly the same, to the pictured one) - along with some other knives he didn't sell.

So if you're really serious I suggest contacting him DIRECTLY - I am sure he will ship to you overseas.
Hint: don't order one to be made (you may wait forever) -
buy one that he has on hand
(especially at or just after a show - those are normally beauties he's made specially for the show)

(e-mail may work, but they don't get their e-mails directly -
a phone call is much better and you can discuss things - and if you can discuss things with Ruby, his wife - she is more than astute, and the business person of the family)

You should really consdier the Benchmade 690. It's a beautiful knife, excellent quality and design and it's a good deal under your limit of $150 (I bought mine for $115 and that was with the BC1 coating). I'll post some pics if I get a chance.

The Blade Show had several makers who had numerous knives with gorgeous wood handles in that price range. Hendrix was one, there was another one whose name escapes me now but I have his card at home. His was even more impressive in terms of the wood he used, and he did some file work along the tang's spine. I'll dig up his info when I get home. The ones I was ogling were on the $125-140 range depending on handle material. Quite well done.

On the production end, do a Google search for Beretta Loveless Quince handle. A very nice Loveless design and quince wood looks great. Steel is AUS8 which is about the same as 440B. Pretty good but not as good as ATS-34.They should go for around $135 or less.

Lakota Knives also have Loveless hunters in Quince wood handles for the same price. Same steel too I believe. Slightly different profile.

I've handled both the Lakota and Beretta and think the profile of the Lakota knife is nicer, though the Beretta version fits my hand a little better.

Thank you all for your input.

Some of these are for future interest, but right now I'm seriously looking at the Lakota hunter from the "outdoorsman.com" (are they reputable?)...and the AG Russell drop point hunter....both of these have chinese quince wood and the bob loveless style drop point. also looking at Beretta Loveless hunter (with Quince wood)

I've obviously fallen in love with Chinese Quince wood!! :D
