Hey guys, I have decided I don't want it but I have no idea what to do now. I spent $8400 on my Submariner just last december and I just don't feel comfortable wearing this thing. I was looking for the last watch I will ever wear but instead I purchased a watch I am afraid to wear. I have no idea how or where I can sell this thing without getting screwed bad, I have accepted the fact that I am going to lose a couple grand on this thing in a online sale but I don't want to get robbed either. Does anyone know any online dealers that will give me a fair dollar amount for this? I will admit that I am more than a little nervous about sending this through the mail to be inspected by god knows who but I don't see another alternative right now. I am going to get another watch but considering I am not a diver and I will never go deeper than the deep end of the swimming pool I don't see the purpose of a dive watch. I am planning on getting a Stowa Flieger instead.

Anyone have any ideas they would be much appreciated.

hey rob. i will preface to say that i don't know the answer. but, my first thought would be to check to see if there are any local Rolex dealers in your area. maybe they would buy it from you, or if not...at least lead you in the right direction. good luck.

Hey, There are a couple dealers here in Edmonton, one of them being the place that I bought it. I will contact them but I don't know that these places buy/sell preowned watches but I could be wrong.

yeah. they may not be willing to buy/sell used, but hope so. might also want to check local, reputable jewelers. i know i always see "BUYING" signs around here. obviously, the trick will be to recoup as much money as you can. cheers.

You can always try listing it in the Exchange forums here on bf.c. Since you are a gold member, this would be free to you.

I am considering it. I think it will be a bit of a hassle for who will get what first, do I get my $6000 first or do I send the watch to a unknown person first? Thats my dilemma, there has to be a great deal trust here and I really don't know who to trust and can they trust me? I know they can trust me but they don't know that. Thats why I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction but I will put it on the exchange if I can figure out how to make sure we both get what we want. Heck, for the amount of money we are talking about I would consider flying to the buyers location if I get a promise to buy and do the sale right with them. I'm only in Canada, I can fly there and back anywhere in Canada or the States for five or six hundred bucks and a few hours of my time......better than losing almost ten grand.

I would say sell it on the forums. If you sell it to a dealer, they are going to shave you down as much as possible, in order to increase their resale profit. A forum member will most likely keep it and wear it. If you're worried about shipping why not use a courier? I once shipped a Sinn 756 from here to New York via EMS, no problems. OK, it wasn't a Rolex but it was a pretty pricey timepiece!

As to the trust factor, well... that's what the feedback system is for!

You should post it on craigslist and see if anyone wants to swap it for a titled vehicle, then sell the vehicle. Safer than selling online and shipping through US Customs. Some Customs agent would be wearing it.

Wear it and if anyone asks tell them it's a fake. I'll trade my Casio for it. :D

Look around the web. There are many sites that specialize in expensive watches. You could also try that certain auction site. I had a friend in Santa Barbara who bought and sold
many Rolexs without any problems. For really expensive watches he used escrow. Both the seller and buyer are protected.

First do some research on the pricing, same model and age as yours, should be easy. You will find the same or similar watches on various sites like Timezone or TURF. I sold a brand new Daytona via Craigslist last year. The fellow wired the payment to my bank and I shipped the watch. Hopefully you have the original box and all the papers that came with it.

Fortunately. Rolex has periodic increases and you may not take that big a hit.

Also look at personal property insurance. Just make sure that it's for a replacement coverage. Then wear it. If you lose it, then you are insured. My coverage is about 100.00 per year on my explorer II, so it's not cheap, but it lets me wear and enjoy my watch.

Good luck.

As far as selling it on here, IMO, the buyer always pays for the item first, and perhaps you can offer a 48-72 hour examination period, they get 2-3 days to look it over and make sure its in the condition they expected if not they can return it back to you. Also be sure if you do paypal to really read over the paypal rules so no one can scam you (paypal gift, or if not paypal gift, then have tracking, signature required, insured, proof of delivery, etc) I would just put it up on the forums here while you look for other means to sell it and you might get lucky and find a buyer here.

It's not too far off to sell it here on the exchange. I remember seeing a few Omegas and Rolexes sell on here as well. We have good taste here ;)

If you have the time, I would suggest joining a watch forum for better visibility with your sale. On the forum, you'd have to build a reputation or buy a membership with which you're allowed to sell, then selling it there.

You could ask Jon Ukman of EBossHoss.com
I bet if he does not take it,he could help you

First, I would tell you to wear it and enjoy it. I have a 6 year old gold/stainless Submariner that I've worn snorkeling, swimming, mountain bike riding, etc. it is still in 99% cosmetic condition and functions perfectly. I have a handful of nice watches in the same price range and you just have to get past the sticker shock and wear them.

If you are certain you want to sell it, check out the Rolex forum, an unofficial site populated by Rolex fans. People buy and sell watches on the site every day, some of which cost much more than yours. And, there are a few individuals that buy and sell them as a sideline business. The long time members are very good and absolutely reputable.

Many fine jewelry stores buy used watches. Govberg Jewlers in Philly, PA is just one. If you sell to a jewelry store, prepare to take a bath on price, however.

I really encourage you to keep it, but check out rolexforums.com. Good luck.

You paid that money to wear it and enjoy and love it! Get your money's worth.
If in like five years you're done with it and it's still in good condition you should be able to still get a bit off of it.
I say enjoy the watch and then sell it off later in life.

But if you're dead set on selling it now... I would just check with Jewelry stores, online dealers, dealers in your town, or just sell it on the forums. On the forums here, payment is made first and then you ship. If you don't want to wait around for someone to check it out you could always make all sales final. Though I think it's probably more fair to give them an inspection period when putting out that much money.

Good luck!

I would agree with the posts suggesting that you keep it, wear it & enjoy it! ; ) I wear my Sub everyday & just love it.
yup, it's picked up the odd scratch but they're pretty tought watches & meant to be used.
Good luck either way with your decision either way
Rob

Why don't you take it back to the jeweler that you bought it from and explain to them your problem and first see what they'll offer you for it, or if they will consignment sale it for you as a favor? If you plan to buy other watches, store credit may be better than cash offer. These guys know you, know the watch is legit, and will be the easiest ones to deal with in verifying the authenticity of the watch.

Thanks you guys and gals, I think I may just have to keep it and wear it. I will just get some insurance in place just in case of theft and like mentioned in a PM I will have to send this in for a cleaning every few years anyway and Rolex will send it back like new every time. I am just going to switch some things up like the bracelet, I am going to get a nice custom leather strap or maybe just a nato strap so I can change things up from time to time. I figure the money is spent and I have the watch, so I may as well use it and one day had it off to one of the kids or hopefully one day maybe a grandson.

Thanks folks..
