Trying to choose my first ESEE.
Looking for a good hiking knife possibly edc as well
I am thinking
HEST
RC3
RC4
What knife would you choose and why.
My hands are medium/large

Legal edc??? Hiking I would get a Rc4. Legal depends on your area. I like the rc3 better than the Hest but for edc I like a smaller knife. I like the Izula. If I could only have one? The Hest is the largest legal edc in my State and is a good sturdy knife. I couldn't decide so I have all the mentioned. But for Edc Izula. Hiking Rc4

I'm partial to the RC-4, however this is the only ESEE that I own. I've found for camp chores it has worked really well. I would say it is a bit large for EDC, I'm not one for having a 'large' blade on my side in public / work. I could see the HEST being quite handy for EDC purposes (blade, bottle opener, wire cutter and a pry bay), and it's a bit smaller then the RC4.

Where abouts in BC are you? I'm up in the Peace.

Cheers,

Hey brother, nice to see you over here!

I had a 4, but gave it to my dad because I got a RMD not long after.

I'm seriously considering getting a 3 though for the same reasons you listed.

I'd say go for a 3.

Hey Joe, Yote!
Yote I just pulled the trigger on an RC 3.
I watched a ton a videos first but I think for EDC and a small camp knife it will do well.

Hey Joe, St
I am really thinking of the RC3, I've got a number of blades similar to the RC4 such as the bravo 1
My usual edc is a spyderco military, but was thinking of trying a fixed blade on weekends for the summer

No blade length limits in Canada,

I just got the RC 4 for hiking purposes, havent had a chance to use it but it seems very promising.

I was in the same position you are - couldn't decide between the 3 and the HEST. I ended up going with the HEST, which should be here soon.

Which ever one you choose you will like it some much youll in up buying all of them

whatever you get you will want them all, I got the Izula then H.E.S.T now I want the 3 and 4!! they are that nice you wont stop getting them its a sickness I tell ya:o

I'd say EDC = Izula
hiking = ESEE4 just because it is the most different when compared to the Izula. The 3 and HEST would probably work fine too.
ESEE 4 is on my list, but so is the HEST...
If I had to get one, I think it would be the 4

For my first taste I went Izula. It would hurt the wallet the least in case I didn't like it ;)

But I am in love with it and have cut all my veggies with it for the past 2 weeks.

Now onto the bigger cutlery, and another Izula for the little lady, maybe pink even though she hates pink.

No blade length limits in Canada,

If there are no blade length laws and you are getting it for edc/hiking/woods wandering, and will be carrying it as an only blade out in the woods I say go for the 4 it is heavier than the 3 but stronger and if you ever once have to put it through some rough use to save your @$$ that extra weight will have been worth it. The HEST is built just as strong but with a shorter blade for more ease of "discretion". I discretely carry one and an Izula as my "urban-survival" knives. If you will be pairing it up with a larger tool in the woods I'd say go for the 3 and you'll love the slicing ability of the 3 for food prep, but the Izula is an awesome last ditch or back-up for a larger tool as well.

They are sold out of the HEST AND THE RC3 that I was looking at.
I can't get in there until next week so we will see what they have in stock

The HEST has the brawn of the RC5, the slicing capability of the RC3, and the EDC capability of the Izula. It is the true alllaround ESEE/RAT Cutlery blade, even though it IS designed by RYP (who I revere as one of the coolest guys on this planet). There are few perfect blades in this world, but the HEST achieves this perfection in its ergonomics, blade profile, the grind of the edge and allaround fit and finish. Those that don't like the prybar/bottle opener... well... Neither has ever been in my way since EDCing as of last August... 10 months...
