I checked Ebay, cheaper than dirt, amazon.com, bass proshops, and a few armynavy stores, looking for a good BOB. Would I do better just to grab a military surplus pack? I kind of like the new M.O.L.L.E. packs but cant seem to find them at a good price.   What are some of the favorites out there.

ETS Tactical On-line website seemed to have the lowest pricing on Eagle Industries Packs.Made in the USA and very high quality.I ordered from them several times myself.Do a search & Check out the website.

For a BOB (your specification) to be thrown into a vehicle and carried only sometimes, a good condition surplus ALICE -1 ("medium") or 2 ("large" [requires metal frame]) would do fine. They, or their European NATO equivalents, used to be readily available from surplus outlets. Heavy-duty in all aspects and built for abuse.

For serious backpacking, you need a high-quality internal backpack for the better-padded shoulder straps and load-bearing waist belt . Kelty and Camptrails are good values, and even with them the lowest priced model may not be the best value. In any event, the commecial backpacks are not built to take the same level of abuse as the military rucksacks.

If it is going to live in the vehicle, get a seabag or duffel bag.
If you are going to carry it any distance get a hiker's backpack.
I have a medium ALICE pack and it aint comfortable with any kind of load in it.
ALICE was my winter fishing pack for years. Snowmobile suit, extra hat, gloves, thermos and about 5 pounds (or so) of tackle was about the limit of comfort for my half hour walk.
If it were really loaded, with heavy items such as water, batteries, ammo, etc. I wouldn't want to have to carry it for more than a mile or 2.

It would be better with the frame. There was an aritcle, a good while ago, on how to mod a boyscout frame for it.

So much depends on what you want to carry and how far.
Good luck with your search.

Uncomfortable! ALICE?! How could you say that? (Just because it's true?:D )

At least once upon a time, you could buy a Camptrails frieghter frame that comes with the waist belt, shoulder straps, and fold-down bottom shelf. You can hang any haversack (ALICE or otherwise) from it - or use it to haul boxes.

I remember those...never got one :(
That and a duffel bag would work and leave plenty of options...such as hauling the bag, coming back and hauling water and another trip for food.
:D

Anybody use one of the newer MOLLE packs? I saw some at Cheaper Than Dirt for less than $50. they look like they would be more comfortable to haul around than an ALICE pack.

Alice pack = last a lifetime
MOLLE pack= lasts 15 mins

Maybe the newer ones are better.

S/F,
CEYA!

by the way do NOT pay $140 for one- if you don't mind ebay you can get one for $80-90, and other online retailers sell them for $100...
