I also have a rat-3 (about $80.00 with shipping). It's D2. I use it at work around town because I can essentially conceal it. I use it a lot but consider it light for camping. For that I use a Ka-bar warthog (1095 steel). However with your budget the custom knives shown should be heavily considered but Ontario and Ka-bar (in my humble opinion) are companies that have steel that can not be beat for the price.
