Help! I need a good knife for under 20 bucks

Here are some knives you can get for $20 or less:
Opinel
Mora
Victorinox
Svord peasant (regular or mini)
Douk Douk
Okapi
Higonokami
Old Hickory (look up mods)

Do a little research; buy whatever floats your boat.

Yeah that really sums up everything. Nothing much else to add.

I'll repeat the advice to find a used USA Old Timer. They are plentiful on the auction site. Depending on the pattern you're looking for, I've gotten them for as low as $8. They are of a higher quality than most of the new knives that are double their price, and it's not hard to find them with 90% of their life left. The way I look at it is you can get a knife that's worth $20, or you can get a knife that's worth $50 with 90% of it's life left for under $20.

Another vote each for Rough Riders if you want new, or a USA OT if you don't mind used. Just remember that if you want carbon steel, get a Schrade that does NOT have a + on the tang stamp. RR are only in stainless.

+1

Older, used knives are the best deal there is in the slipjoint world. USA Old Timers are the best deal in that subset.

If you don't want to deal with the auction site or flea markets, yard sales, antique stores, pawn shops, etc. and you still want the stereotypical slipjoint look then go with Rough Rider.

Then start keeping an eye out in those aforementioned places.

Dogstar's list is spot on.

Rough Riders. Lots of patterns to choose from, pretty good knives, great low prices so you can try out different models without investing a bunch of cash.

I agree, I wanted a Camp Knife and got the Rough Rider and it is actually a pretty good well built knife.
totally worth the money and im surprised they don't go for more $.

When looking at Mora knives also consider Hultafors knives.

There is a Rough Rider stockman with a caplifter. Yellow or jigged bone.

I've had sporadic internet access lately while traveling, so I'm a little late to this party. But I can personally attest that almost every suggestion here is worthwhile (I don't have a Mora or a Sod buster Jr). I have new stainless steel Rough Riders, Chinese-made Buck Solo and Trio that came as a set for under $20 almost exactly a year ago, new and used Vic Recruits and Pioneers, carbon steel Opinels, and a pre-owned Schrade USA 34OT. I have almost no complaints about any of them for the jobs I ask them to do, and consider all of them excellent bargains.

Great suggestions all. Case Soddie gets my pick. Take a look at your local pawn shop or antique shop and you might come across a gem.
