Hi everyone!
I'm pretty new to knives, but my boyfriend is a big nut for them. I have a bit of a situation. He's an international student and he's leaving... soon. :( I really want to get him something and what better than his favorite things? Problem is, I know nothing about knives! >.< I know that his favorite brand is Spyderco and he already owns the Caly Jr., Sage, and Caly 3. He's buying the Crossbill for himself. He absolutely does not like the Cricket (which is the one I like :D) What is another very good quality knife that I can get him!? I really need to get it soon...
Thank you so much!
Lalala:)

where is he leaving for? There are some laws that forbid locking knives, so something like a Spyderco UKPK would be perfect, as it is a non locking, slipjoint style knife.

If that's no concern, then based on the three he owns, it sounds like he likes nice knives in the 3" range. So he might like the new Spyderco Native 5, Spyderco Chaparral.

If he wants something a little different maybe Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Caly 3.5 is a bit bigger than his caly 3...

It's really hard to say not knowing what he's looking for. Spyderco has a ton of options, as do a lot of other good companies like Kershaw, Benchmade, etc...

Paramilitary 2 or military. Anyone who likes Spyderco is likely to enjoy either of those choices. If I were you, I'd search google for the blue M390 Paramilitary 2. There's one company selling them and they go for right around 180. Excellent steel in an excellent knife.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Lalala.

I'd have to add another recommendation for the ParaMilitary 2(around $110)......simply awesome EDC.

I looked at the Paramilitary. I don't think he would like that one too much. And yes goodeyesniper, he likes the 3" blades. I forgot to mention that. He owns some Benchmade and Kershaw blades but he says Spyderco is his favorite. He likes the locks that are on the inside. I can't remember what they are called, I just know to use your thumb to push it over then put the blade away. Yes, I am knife dumb :p. I think he would like the Native 5... hopefully it is affordable :(

The locking mechanism that you describe is a liner lock. Unfortunately, a search on the Spyderco website doesn't turn up much but they do make a bunch of them.

Ok. I REALLY like the Native 5. But on the Spyderco website, it's $200! I don't know about you, but I don't have that kind of money at all. I'm a broke college student. Crap.

The prices on the website are Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices. Try doing a Google search instead. You will find dealers with much lower prices.

What is your price limit?

(( not a paid BF Dealer )) or knifecenter.com or (( not a paid BF Dealer )) or newgraham.com or nationalknives.com are all excellent dealers who I believe all also sell through here and who would be able to provide a pretty decent discount to the MSRP. The Native 5 is a great knife, but it has a backlock as opposed to a liner lock which is what you said your bf prefers. That having been said, the backlock is a pretty nice lock option. Have you thought about maybe a delica? They're not too expensive and again, they're a knife just about anyone who likes spyderco's would like. I still say get him a para2 though...most people who like Spyderco's swear by them.

EDIT: You might also think about the Gayle Bradley in CPM-M4. It's supposed to be a pretty great knife and sells for around 140 or less.

EDIT2: Sorry, didn't know they weren't a paid dealer here. Won't happen again.

I'd advise you to check all of the knife laws that your boyfriend will be subject to as he brings the knife you're buying him back home. It would be a shame to buy him a knife only to have it confiscated and destroyed by customs officials. And yes, that can very well happen.

I do believe he is staying in the US. If not he's moving back to Kuwait. Ok, I lied. I like the Delica better! And it's so much cheaper! Thank you MJF! I looked at a stainless steel handle with the vg-10 steel. I actually really like this. I'll do some looking to see if I can find a good price. My budget is between preferably less than $100 and no more than $150.

Just a suggestion but if he is a Bladeforums member you could look up his forum posts and see if he has mentioned any knives that he's been drooling over. Just make sure he hasn't already gotten them.

No problem Lalala...Hope he likes whatever you get. If he likes spydercos, you probably won't go wrong buying him a delica....it's pretty much a standard for spyderco lovers.

^ I think the OP meant she "lied" and prefers the Delica over the Native 5.

I will suggest the Native 5 and yes, the PM2. If you can find a G-10 Delica it's another I'd choose.

Ok I just found out he already has a Delica4! Poo. And yes, when I said I lied, I was referring to liking the knife better. I wanted to get a little engraving on the inside blade, just a little one with my name so it's personal. I think I will just get the one I like so he will always remember it. One of my favorites is the Dragonfly SS Tattoo C28T. He knows its one of my favorites. Thank you so much everyone for the help!

Barring the Delica, I think I still have to recommend the Paramilitary 2. It really is one of Spyderco's best knives.
