Help . . . I need Manix training . . . or training wheels.

Please don't call it an Axis lock, it is a caged ball bearing lock. Similar in a way but also very different. Each company respectively designed and patented their own lock in this case.
.... Please don't call the thumb studs on my Sebenza thumb studs, it is called thumb lugs...

I just tried my Manix 2 LW with one hand, didn't think I could but I did open it and I have small hands and I is a Klutz. So if I can anyone can. So there!!!!!!

This thread, the CBBL, and the Axis Lock is why I always change my mind about buying such knives.

Recently I was gonna get a Manix 2, but I have always had difficulty operating those types of locks. I'm glad I waited and was able to get a liner lock knife.

My issue was that I always felt like the knife was gonna slip out of my hand while trying to close. And I'm old so I can't be taught new tricks.

I'll stick with liner, RILs, compression and back locks.

The thread has been educational though.

rmeron,

Dear tyro,

My problem is closing it. I can open 'er all day, a thousand times a day without a thought, I can even do the middle finger flick on occasion, I must admit to botching it now and then though.

I challenge you to close it one handed, with no pocket clip attached and no fingers closed across the blade slot.

PS:
Since my last post I took a taste on the blade pivot with a torx and now the blade drops consistently when I cross the blade slot grip and so I don't need to give it that little drop motion. I was afraid that with a cross the blade slot grip and being the adrenaline charged animal that I am at work I would do a drop motion and cut the back of my fingers. I found before that out of the pocket mine would blade drop before I loosened it but after holding it and practicing several times it would stop dropping and just hang there. I can't account for that yet. Either I heated up the handle with my hand, it expanded and so had more friction in the pivot or from gripping it it began to pinch the blade . . . who knows.

I have the slightest trace of blade play at this point, mostly when the blade is between open and closed. I am not concerned about a touch of play but know to keep an eye on it.

I have 2 Manix 2 LW's and a G10 and with any of them all I have to do is pull back on the lock with my thumb on one side and my index finger on the other and the blade swings open or closed. No fingers closed across the blade slot and I can do it with or without the clip but it's a little easier with. There's also no play on any of them and the pivot screws are tight on the G10 and only loosened a tiny bit on the LW's.

Do they have a patent or a trade mark on "thumb lugs"? My comment was not just about semantics, but rather about intellectual property rights as well as giving credit where it is due. Maybe I am missing something. :) Also, I am not trying to be the police, just trying to help and maybe at least slow down the steady flow of misinformation that is the internet.

Admirable
Works for me.

I ordered some stuff from a magazine. It is for making southern body parts longer (last thing I need . . . HO, HO . . . WHOA . . . let me TELL YOU ! ! !) :D . . . but any way . . . it should make my fingers longer too . . . right ? ? ? ?
:)

I'm going back for another round with the torx.

Thanks

OK I decided to try it AGAIN with my left hand (takes the clip out of the equation). I started actually getting it to work.
then
I discovered that what I was doing was getting the blade to drop open from its closed position. I tried closing it with my left as you do . . .
couldn't.
Put it down. Then I thought well is it that different ? Picked it up again and got mixed results but got it to drop a time or two.
I found that it works if I hold the knife horizontal (edge down of course) in front of me with the blade across my chest. In other words holding it pointing away from me or down I can't get enough torque against my palm for traction.

So
Thank you ! You helped me.

Interesting thread. When I first got my Manix 2, the BB lock was stiff as hell. It did break in eventually and that subsequently made opening and closing much easier. I can for the most part treat it like a (much sturdier) Axis lock. Though to open I prefer doing so with either the middle finger or thumb instead of using the BB lock cuz it's so much fun :)

Anyway, back to the Manix. Closing it one handed is just as many have said: thumb and index finger on the BB Lock, using your palm and remaining fingers to provide the required leverage. Just takes practice.

A little video demonstration. For reference I'm right handed and I went ahead and took off the pocket clip. Closing one handed is all about the wrist action

ETA: for one handed closing, I also find that keeping your palm facing upward or at least horizontal is best. If it's facing downward at all, the blade tends to close too fast and bounce once it reaches the bottom, at least for me.

I have a Manix 2 on the way so I'll jump back in when I have had a chance to go hands on.

OK Manix 2 XL here today.

Lock is as smooth as any other Spyderco; no issues with a one hand close on this one.
