Help! I think I broke my sak!!!

I agree this belongs in W&C, but it sure is amusing. I mean on the one hand you have the guys that are trying to be sympathetic. On the other hand, you have those who appear to think this guy got what he deserved. Put me firmly in the second group. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't batoning something that is to be done in a survival-like situation. Maybe he got lost in his garage and needed to build a fire to survive the night, and the only tool handy in his garage was his SAK, w/ the saw blade, that he batoned the 2x4 (or 4x2) with......hope SAR didn't have too tough a time getting to him.:D

I'm going to be sympathetic here. There are enough people and places that say this is possible for folks to think it's worth having a go. Also a bit of 2x4 should be pretty soft and might feel like it'll split really easily.

Would I do it? Not in a month of Sundays, but then I think splitting wood is a job for an axe not a knife. I have used a knife (fixed blade only) to baton and would do so again but it's really not my first choice.

Unfortunately I don't think there will be anything you can do to fix the knife so sending it in would seem to be your only option. If they refuse to do anything with it then don't be to surprised, batoning definitely falls outside of "normal use" for a SAK. Chalk this one up to experience mate and don't worry about it to much.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that our friend here is a little young and fairly new to knives. Cut him some slack guys. He admitted that he broke his knife doing something that he shouldn't have. Put it into perspective here. Is he donning a hockey mask and beating the tar out of knives until they fail?:p

At least a Rucksack isn't an expensive model:thumbup:
I will concur that at least the thread title belongs in W&C:D

Well with this small of a piece of wood, I didnt think it would hurt it. Plus this is my first sak, and I meant to say 4 inchs long by 2 inchs wide, not 2 by 4. I am sending it in to vic tomorrow for repairs, then TRUST ME, I will not baton a sak or slipjoint. Now my Zt 0302, it can handle batonning, with that big ole framlock and large pivot.

I wouldn't baton with any folding knife. You already busted up your SAK, do you really want to possibly screw up your ZT302?

Good advice. The ZT is a tank...for a folder. Some folders are stout as all get out and can handle battoning through wood...if you have to. "can handle" and "coming out unscathed" are two different things. If you want a good cheap knife that can handle that sort of thing (if you're careful), get a Mora. Nice blade, sharpens easily, costs 10-30 bucks:thumbup:
An axe is the best bet. A khukuri works well too. A fixed blade will do in a pinch, but try to never baton with a folder unless you are 90 miles from nowhere in the woods. Even then, maybe look for a sharp rock or use a wooden wedge to split wood.

I have learned much more about knives by breaking them than by using them respectfully. In my youth I would throw just about any knife I owned (and some I didn't). I routinely broke throwing knives and bayonets. Now I have a pretty sophisticated sense of what a knife will take.

Same here, and a could of "near misses" scars from return-to-sender throws:eek:

I am young, But I am not new to knives. I guess I was used to having a knife like my zt, that was bombproof. I have only split 1 small piece of wood with my zt. But the disadvantage of the zt is its weight, and that it cant carve anything. Thats why Im trading it. I have learned my lesson about doing stupid things with knives not meant to be used. I could have walked 200 feet to the house to get my RC-6 but I didnt because I was lazy.

Oh, And steely_gunz, How about you send me a khukri so I dont have to baton with my sak. (:

I'll trade you a Orange Military for that ZT. :D

What happened to your RC-6?

do you guys have any idea what went wrong?

Yes, you used a wrench to drive a nail. Next time, get a hammer.

And before you hit your SAK with a hammer, I was speaking metaphorically. :p

Seriously, you learned a lesson cheaply. SAKs aren't as expensive as a lot of folders out there. Once you get it fixed, and I hope you do, remember to use a fixed blade for batoning.

joshk nothing is wrong with my rc-6, I just had it inside, not with me. And I might take you up on your offer of trade, I am going to look at a couple knives that I want tommorrow, and If i like the millie, you will see an email.
