hello to all of you!

i am rather new to knives, steels and such, and so i've come to ask for your help and opinion!

what i'm looking for:
-> a fixed blade knife with about 4" to 8" blade length
-> suited for "combat"/survival use
-> with a MOLLE compatible sheath
-> preferably in black.

until now i thought the Gerber LMF II infantry was the knife to get, at least from looks and description given.
but after reading a bit through this forum, and other reviews, i realized i wanted something of higher quality, with a GOOD quality steel.
the consensus seems to be (pretty much at least) that Busse makes REALLY awesome knives.
on their website unfortunately i couldn't find an overview of the models that they can produce at the moment.

as you know what i'm looking for, and what "looks" i like, which Busse would you recommend to me? or maybe a completely different manufacturer?

thank you very much for your help!

€: if this belongs in an other subforum, please forgive me newbness, and move the thread!

Try hanging out in the Busse subforum. You'll find lots of options.

In case you didn't know, no Busse knives come with sheaths - sheaths are all custom made.

busses are fine knives no doubt, but they are expensive. if you are willing to pay for them, i think you would get one of the best fixed blades in the industry. if you dont want to pay a lot of money you could check out ESEE knives, which fit all of your requirements.

if you think you want a BUSSE get one, they are oneof a kind.
if you just want quality with those features there are other options.

So if you really want the one and only busse go HERE and get the information from the helpful folks over there. It isn't easy to pick up all the details about busse, and you will not be looking through a catalog finding a model and calling them to place an order, they have an entirely different operation.

the price is not my main concern.
and no, i didn't really know about the sheaths, but i think i read that one of their sheath-makers also makes tactical-nylon-sheats, so MOLLE shouldn't be a problem i guess?

i've taken a look at the Busse forum, but i am kind of overwhelmed by the sheer number of models, and i don't know which are available for order at the moment?
on Bussecombat.com i see only the battle mistress, and the Boss street. does that mean only those two are being produced right now?

Check for sale section in these forums. Busse and Busse-kin have own for sale subforums. They work very nicely. Be warned. After your first Busse, you will get Infi addiction.

I know. I bought my Busse GameWarden a month ago... I just bought my 2nd Busse... I just need to wait till mailman brings it to me.

@ ron_m80:

you mentioned other options, that will have the features i'm looking for!
what would you recommend?

Gundude already mentioned ESEE, that would be my recommendation as well. Same warranty, a no questions asked lifetime warranty. The price is very nice, they have molle compatible sheaths.

You can get any type of sheath made.

Those are the only two on the site. The Busse Company Store also has knives at times. The upcomming Ganza will be your best chance for a bigger selection. Look at the knives that were at Blade(in Busse room), and most will be offered again in the Ganza.

And it does seem like alot to digest, but if you go spend some time in the Busse room you will learn alot.

Good buys on the exchange here also, but be carefull. Many of those knives with a huge markup from Blade will be in the Ganza.

edit- I didn't suggest a knife because 4" to 8" is to large a range(alot of knives in that range). I would narrow that range, and ask this in the Busse room.

i prefer esee knives myself. they have excellent sheaths, really tough black coating, and they make the molle backing as well. it's really a one-stop shopping. there are three esee knives that fit your specs: esee-4 (4" blade), esee-5 (5.25" blade) & the esee-6 (6.5" blade).

no offense to other makers, but the esee guys are the real deal. they actually go out into the jungle and use knives rather than sit on a desk coming up with different designs. aside from the molle requirement, i'd recommend ka-bar/becker knives as well.

i beat the crap outta my esee & becker knives and won't hesitate to depend my life on them, either in the woods or in the real-world. what are you most likely be doing with them?

so would you say the ESEE steel's quality can be compared to the INFI?

the knife will mainly be a carry knife when backpacking and hiking in the woods and mountains, so mostly survival, but i wouldn't mind if it was suitable for "combat" or let's say SD. not that i'm in any way trying to get in such a situation, but it would be nice to have something at hand when SHTF.

€: just a quick question:

so how DO i get a busse, except from some other forum member that wants to sell one? i thought it was possible to order directly from Busse? or did i get that completely wrong?

There is also bussekin...... Scrapyard and swamp rat, they are more affordable but still with the same quality.

Alright Jerry and other makers, you better get real, and start hitting those jungles hard!!

Sorry JV3, J/k:p... and I couldn't help it:o

1095 isn't INFI, but still a very good high carbon steel that cost much less.
INFI isn't a stainless, but about as close as you can get. About like D2, or a bit better in that regard.

As I said in above post, the upcomming Blade Show Ganza will be your best bet at a larger selection.
It will be a week or two away. Stay tuned, be patient, and you will find its not to hard to find Busse's. Keep an eye on the room for instructions for the Ganza, they will be given before it happens.

Not at all, INFI is supposed to have some very unique characteristics. But to be honest and fair, I have never broken a knife in the length range you specified while using it properly. If you are thinking of the end of times senario, I would say INFI would be very comforting. But the heat treatment produced by ROWEN for ESEE, is nothing to downplay either.

many knives work wonderful outdoors. and the best knife for SD is the one you have on you (I read that here somewhere, makes alot of sense to me)

This is best answered in the BUSSE forum. and you would get much more thurough feedback on your other points as well from the helpful bunch over there. If the model you love is older and no longer made, you might be sadly disappointed though, so be prepared.

i have no experience with infi, sorry. but with that kinda blade length i'd highly doubt you'll snap a steel with a good heat treat like rowen's 1095 (rowen makes the knives for esee) out in the woods.

i didn't name names other than esee & becker. uh, oh. you're in trouble with busse now!:D there are various ways of demonstrating a blade's capabilities. i just prefer the all natural method

You might check out scrapyard and swamprat too.

The Scrapyard SOD with a 8" blade might be a good knife for you.
