I was gifted a bunch of old "tobacco sticks" that I'm thinking of using on knife handles. These sticks came from Maryland and were used to hang tobacco leaves for drying inside barns back in the day. So this wood was probably harvested 50 years ago or more, probably from native trees. Below is a photo of a piece I did some quick cleanup on -- just a rough sanding then a boiled linseed oil treatment. It has straight grain, and a rich yellow/orange color (which shows fairly true to life in this photo). It is fairly lightweight wood, and on the soft side (can be dented with a fingernail).

Any ideas?

Could be cedar, or osage. Doubt its anything more exotic such as mahogany.

But its colorful.

Thanks! I suspected cedar also, but didn't realize it could get such an orange cast.
