I just found, in the bottom of a tackle box that has not been used for 20+ years, my father's old "hunting" knife. It was sheathed, but it has rusted pretty severely. I have removed the rust, but I cannot make out the name of the manufacture. I can see certain letters. If I use Xs to indicate the letters that I cannot see, it may read XattXXgus . The first letter may be a G or a C. I would love to know the maker of this knife. I care nothing about the value at all. I just want to restore it and save it for future generations.

The knife probably dates back at least to the early 60s, possibly earlier. I have distinct memories of using this knife to do all kinds of things that would make moms nervous as a kid. The butt end of the knife has three metal plates and a rectangular center "stake" and two metal dowels about 1/8 of on inch in diamter. The last plate (the one exposed) is "dimpled". The handle is made up of about 23 concentric leather circles. The last circle is a red material.

My father was in the Navy, but I do not see anything that indicates that this was USA issued. It was his camping knife. I plan to blue the metal, and have an expert get the edge back into usable condition. I also plan to have new sheath made for it, as I have the old one to use as a template. So far, I have wet sanded it with 220,320, and 400 paper, and I have given it a bath in Oshpho to get all of the little nooks and crannies rust free.

Any suggestions or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. What I know about knives would fit in a thimble, but I am a quick study.

Thanks for your time.

Google "Cattaraugus knife" images. See if any of the images look familiar.

It's too many letters for wheel of fortune, but Cattaraugus Cutlery Company is my guess. The sheath is one of the things that promoted the rust. I wouldn't store it in there once you get it up and running again.

From the name and pommel description, it sounds like a Cattaraugus 225Q, a WW2 vintage fixed blade. Do a forum search on "Cattaraugus 225Q" for pic examples.
