Quick Google search for "imperial Japanese navy dagger" turned up a bunch of results for similar looking knives. I have absolutely no clue how to verify authenticity but knowing what to call it can help you start researching. Good luck, I hope it's authentic.
It is indeed a Japanese Naval Dirk. They've been reproduced some, both good and bad, but I leave the discussion up to someone that knows them better.
