Was given to me by a friend, it is 19" long, almost 1" thick at the end, and 3" wide...

It says STANDENS p-6880

I have determined that it was a leaf spring, before it was cut, im just not sure what type of metal.

is 6880 a type of steel?

i was thinking of forging it into something for the guy who gave it to me

thanks for your help, and here are some pics:

Could be a lot of things, 5160 being the average guess. If you get no real info on the makeup, forge it and heat treat it like 5160. The other steels similar have close enough HT specs to 5160 to get by with that.

I would bet if you added up Mike and therron's ages it wouldn't be close to the age of that spring.
I'm glad to see eager young folks getting into bladesmithing. Too many Old Pharts around here.

Unless they were using something else at the time they made that spring, it's 5160. I talked to the production manager a while back.
