Hello Everyone, I'm Dave and I'm new here. I stumbled acreoss this forum via google when trying to locate or have made a custom knife dagger. I dont know anything about knives so please bare with me. I am looking for someone who can tell me what it is called or what I'm looking for or where to go to have a dagger made. My wife loves the movie a princess bride and I want to get her the "buttercup knife dagger" as seen in the movie. I dont know what it is called or where to start? Can anyone here help me or tell me where I need to post or who to talk to or where to start to find this item? I have pictures but I cant seem to upload them here. Any help would be great. Thanks, - Dave

how much money are you prepared to spend?

I dont want to spend more than $200 if possible. Do you think that I could get one somewhere for around that price or one that looks similar?
I dont know much about knives or cost or anything and I know there are a ton of places to buy knives online but there are so many different kinds I didn't know where to start or what it was called or who to contact or who to look for? I didnt know if there was a certain dealer that sells them or sells ones that look similar or if this was going to be a full custom make thing?...

I did some Google searching and see probably what you want. There is NO ONE willing to make an ornate dagger of the type she is holding for $200 or even $1000.

However....

You would do well with an ornate dagger from one of the MANY fantasy replica knife companies.

Here's a link to a bunch of Google images of the same. Truth is, it's probably irrelevant she finds the EXACT dagger: They are all ceremonial and ornate to that degree.

I hope this helps. Welcome.

Ok, thanks. that's a great start. I didnt realize they were that expensive. Thank you for the links. I looked at the budk link and some of those are really cheap. a few look close but the handle is not exactly right. So just to clarify since I am new to this, its called a "ceremonial" dagger? or a "rapier" Also if I got one of those cheaper ones from the budk link you sent me, would it be simple to keep the blade and swap out the handle or not really? Also do you know if I found something close to it, how would I know about the length of the blade? Is there a certain size or length of blade I need to look for?
Thank you again for the links, you are very helpful.
Thanks - Dave

it looks to me like the handle is more work than the blade, so swapping it might not be an option. i am not sure if there is a proper name for it. i think to have one made would be at around 2 grand. unfortunately the replicas are not well crafted. the craftsmanship is what takes all the time and that is why it would cost so much to have a nice one made.

As others have said, to have that dagger made properly (e.g., as a proper cutting tool, not just a movie prop) would be expensive.

If you're just looking to get something decorative, that wouldn't actually cut, you may want to look more into movie props and prop replicas than knives and swords. A quick Google search brings up a bunch of Inigo Montoya swords for a few hundred bucks. I'm not seeing anything for the dagger itself, but I'd have to imagine there are companies out there specializing in movies props that could make something like that out of untempered cheap steel and wood/foam/spray paint for considerably less than a real knife would cost.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a prop, made by the movie crew. Looks like a conglomeration of various parts, based on a medieval stilletto.

I have an article around here somewhere on the history of the stilletto. I'll see if I can find it tonight, and get the info to you.

I looked into the stiletto knife and its not quite it it doesnt seem to look like what I keep finding as far as that goes. It looks like to me like a simple flat blade. I wish I knew the technical terms for the blades and types, I have had a hard time narrowing it down or finding anything quite like it.
I have found many "fantasy, gothic, medieval, ect etc" types of cheap or inexpensive blades but so far, none with that long thin blade. Everything I find seems to be very thick. I have checked with a few people online and to have it made custom would be alot more than I wanted to spend. Its a present that will sit in a display cabinet and never see the light of day but I still want it to be steel of some kinda and not just a plastic replica. I have looked into that as well.. Like I said before I dont know much about blades or the types of metal or steel used so I dont know why I find alot that are very cheap and some that are very expensive but I am assuming its all in the metals used? I am still on the hunt though.

Hi there, Dave.
BudK products are wall hangers, exposition and show pieces and won't cut anything or if they do, they'll dull in an instant or break apart after short time. For mere looks, they ain't bad, but nothing else.

You are looking for an Stiletto with triangular cross section, used to penetrate through the gaps in armor and defeat downed knights or soldiers with heavy clothing. Also considered an efficient assassination weapon, carried concealed by the assassins who would get very close to the victim and stab one or many times causing deadly internal bleeding.
A rapier is a small, thin sword with great edge length focused on dueling and stabbing blows.

Welcome to BF!
Indeed, looks like a Venetian or Italian Stiletto from the 15th century.
There are a few made by Windlass, but if you're looking for one as ornate as Buttercup's you're going to have to have it custom made.

As suggested by AF AF you should contact Dan Graves.

Good Luck!

I cant seem to get the picture to show up on here but I added a link to another screenshot. It looks like a flat blade though unless I'm mistaken?
As where the siletto is pointy on 4 sides right?

Can you compare this screen grab link with the picture above?

For some reason I couldn't get the picture to show up here like the ones above you posted. But the blade looks flat in comparison? unless its a camera angle or trick of the eye.

Thanks, :)
