Hi:

First time in this forum area.

I would like to solicit from y'all on what are the best Kali/Escrima/Arnis books and videos (VHS/DVD) out there.

Looking for intermediate to advanced applications.

Thanks

Ax.

Two video sets I would recommend (though there are many other good ones out there) are the Dog Brothers series and Hock Hochheim's FMA series. The Dog Brothers set will get you going in real time if you practice and apply. Hock gives a good step-by-step progression through a streamlined combative version of the Presas family Arnis / Inosanto Kali. If you already are trained in the FMA, have a look at Jim Keating's Advanced Sumbrada tape for many advanced concepts.

Best,

Ax,

I would recommend "Secrets of Double Stickfighting". Espada Y Daga and the Laban Laro Series by the late PG Edgar Sulite of Lameco Eskrima. On the same token, check out my instructors book, "Complete Sinawali" by Master Reynaldo S. Galang. It explains some of the subtle movements and strategies that are often neglected or misunderstood when training in Sinawali.

I am confident you'll be pleased with these suggestions.

John J - I have always heard the best things about the Lameco series! They are on the list for "someday" to be sure. Too many tapes, too little time...;-D

Where can the sinawali book be found? I had not heard of it before.

Best of all,

Pete Kautz

Right on Smoke...what'cha got? Is it a training film or a movie?

Can't think of too many Arnis *movies* except "Pacific Connection / Sticks of Death" with Roland Dantes and "The Stuntman(?)" which Dan Inosanto appears in. :)

Another series of FMA tapes that I enjoyed was the late Professor Remy Presas' first series (from the mid 80s). It was 5-6 tapes long and a lot like seeing Professor in a seminar at the time. I watched one of these tapes again just recently, and even all these years later they still stand up because of how Professor could teach.

Best,

Pete Kautz

Just a little movie from the 80's.

I'm lucky enough to have seen most of the FMA themed flicks out there.

Axolotls, the forum archives have a lot of reviews of tapes and books. The tapes mentioned already are a good beginning.

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your recommendations. I will definitely check them all out. I just finished going through all 33 pages in this forum... Time for a break :o

I went for the SDMA Series from Hock and the LAMECO Videos.

The lowest prices on the Lameco's were $31.96 each. This sure is going to bust my budget for the rest of the year :(
