I'm new to the forums and need some advice.

I just bought a Kershaw Blur 1670S30V. It was the last one in stock at Sportsman's Warehouse. After I got home I was looking at it I noticed that the blade is off center when it is closed and actually rubs against one scale. This can't be normal can it?

Before I either return it to the store (30 mile round trip) or contact Kershaw is there anything I should do that could fix the problem?

I've also posted this under "General Knife Discussion" but this may be a better place for this topic.

UPDATE: Received my brand new replacement Blur in the mail today. My original knife was born in May 07 date while the new one was born in Mar 08. Sent it in last week and it arrived on Wed. Thanks so much to Kershaw CS for the new knife. The blade is centered and doesn't rub against the frame. I'll post pics shortly.

Being slightly off center can be normal. Enough to hit scales/liner, I would venture a guess that probably not. You can adjust the tension/torsion screws and see if you find the happy spot between ease of opening and recentering.

I am sure that some the more experienced Kershaw techs will chime in soon.

OK..........there are a few options. If you really like the knife (read don't return it and risk not being able to get another for a while) and you want it perfect send it in. If you want to try to fix it your self open the knife, loosen the pivot screw about half way, apply pressure in the opposite direction and tighten it down. Close the knife and check the centering. if the fix took back the pivot screw out about a quarter turn and check the speed safe. if it is firing right you are done. if it is sluggish, back the pivot screw out a little more. Again if everyting is lined up you are good to go.

If thad didn't work try the same thing with the blade closed. If nothng works you can order a new pivot bolt set from Kerhaw or you can just let them fix it. My suggestion is to let them fix it if the 2 "easy" fixes don't take.

Keep in mind that there is loctite on the pivot screw so you will have to put something (rubber or some tape rolled up) behind the clip to grip the non torx side of the pivot bolt so it will break loose. You will obvioulsy need a number 9 torx bit for the pivot. Number 6 on the scale screws if you decide to tear it down. Enjoy

Thanks Shaman. I've tightened and loosened the pivot screw, but to no avail. I'm not sure if that's the same as the tension/torsion screw, though. I've also tightened the frame screws which were a little loose. That made matters worse.

I'm planning on contacting Kershaw on Monday if its a problem that can't be solved with a little help from y'all here on the forum.

Thanks for the suggestion Shaman. Here is what it looks like closed from above.

The gap on the bottom is 2 to 3 times the size of the gap on the top.

Thanks spiralarchitect. I've tried loosening and tightening in both the closed and opened positions. Thank goodness I've got a nice set of Wiha Torx tools in all the small sizes. Didn't seem to help. I'm not sure about taking it completely apart. I think I'll leave that to Kershaw. I have read that their customer service is very good and it should return in better than new condition if I send it in.

You shouldn't have any problems. Their CS does a nice job.... now you just have to wait to play with your new toy:grumpy:

My rainbow leek was that, so I sent it in to Kershaw--received it better than new.
So yeah, send it in-they'll take good care of you and your knife. ;)

Thanks for the positive feedback on their CS. It sounds like they are universally admired for their high level of service after the sale.

....and the beautiful part is that if you don't send it around a major holiday you will get you knife back very quickly. I'm in WV and my knife left me on a Friday and I got it back the following Friday. Do the math and it was at CS for less than 3 days b/c their is 2 days (minimum) of transit each way.

Well, I've tried loosening and tightening the frame screws and pivot working front to back, back to front, pushing the open blade in the direction of the rub, nothing seems to help. I guess I'll get my little box ready for tomorrow and a visit to the UPS Store. :(

Luckily, Kershaw is only about 600 miles straight up I-5.

Well my Blur is on its way back to Kershaw. It should be there Wednesday. I'll post a follow-up once it returns. Thanks to everyone for all of their suggestions and help.
