HELP! knife stolen from checked baggage

Gollnick, thanks for the kind words. I'd just want the same if someone wrongly accused me.

Golok, sorry, but as you can see from the first post here, the knife is already the property of another forumite. You'll have to take it up with him, lol. :)

I am glad it all worked out in the end. I absolutely hate having things taken from me. Question: Are you not allowed to lock your checked luggage in the US? In all my travels I have locked my luggage and all was well.

The suggestion to rather pack a cheap knife is a good one. But then I also don't really like carrying cheap (read bad quality) knives. I'd have to go with a locked down Spyderco. Perhaps they'll even bring out a traveller's Spyderco where you could actually put a lock through the spyderhole on the blade and lock it through the frame as well. Keyholders only will be able to open the knife.

And...er.... I feel sorry for the guy that you promised your knife to. After it spent soooo much time in your underpants I'm not sure I'd even want it for free now ;)

Cheers,

Greg

Don't be TOO hard on yourself. You, me, and everyone else has made mistakes. You have the maturity to admit it publically. I make goofs all the time. Part of being human. :)

Oh, and I agree, never travel with a tool you are not prepared to loose. When I check a suitcase, I usually throw in a Leatherman or my SwissChamp. Easily replaced. Not too expensive.

OK guys. Please do not kill me. I feel doubly bad now.

So I packed the knife in with underwear so there was something else in the bag rather than the knife just bouncing around. Anyhow, I get back to my hotel room tonight and notice a pair of underwear on the floor rolled up (like all the ones in my bag). Go over, unroll it and there is the knife. I feel like a real ass now. I am glad for all the support I was given, but bad about wrongfully accusing the airline/TSA (although I do believe things sometimes do "walk away" in "security", this time they did not and it was my fault).

Now I must again straighten things out with the person whom I was to trade with and who has been most gracious about the whole incident (see post in G,B,&U).

Thanks again for the support and very very very sorry about the screw up.

P.S. I think I will try the locked up spyderco trick from now on when I fly.

I'm very disappointed. I doubt the mite you're trading with will even want the knife now that he knows it was rolled up in a pair of your unspeakables :p

Really, don't feel too bad about it. You made an honest mistake. When we went to Texas, my dad thought he'd lost his Victorinox CyberTool. After a month, he bought a new one. Later on, he found it in a pair of shoes he'd taken with him. Things get misplaced. and you were forthcoming. Also, this has been an informative thread.
