OK a couple years back i stumbled on a knife that had a very unique opening. that had the opening mechanism like the old S&W 6042, but was free flowing like a Bali-song. I don't remember the name or maker and that is why i ask for help. Any help is Appreciated thanks for your time.

Spyderco does not sell the Janisong state side. They had run into issues in the past with "illegal" knives and am pretty sure they have had whole shipments seized. Google about "Janisong issues legality" or something along those lines and you will find info.

I guess it's my anglocentrism talking when I say I'm very surprised that Spyderco found a large enough market outside of the west to justify the production of a knife for strictly outside-US sales.

I really want one of these, too. It's like a greatly improved Triple Action, not technically being a butterfly knife.

I'm with you on that. I really want one of these and find it really weird they're totally illegal in the US (if I'm getting this right).

So the importation of balisongs/balisong like knives and switchblades is illegal... then how are there so many cheap, Chinese, flea market balisongs? It's so strange to me that this one specific model is seemingly singled out. I clearly have no real knowledge about the laws surrounding this. And frankly it's quite intriguing.

Good news from a thread on Spyderco's forums...

Looks like they plan to produce them in Golden in the near future, circumventing the legality issues.

I hope they can get it sorted out. Would be a great and unique piece to add to the collection. Thanks for putting up the effort and info. One of the many reasons I love this forum.

No problem. It's Friday and my boss (and his boss) are out :D

I'm from South Africa and its a very popular model here, also sold well in Taiwan (place where it was manufactured)

I bought one not so long ago. Very well made for the price. Have a good heft in the hand and flip nicely, and by design very safe. An American guy did managed to take one back to the state. (according to my local dealer)
