My dearest darling wife is getting me my first becker (stop snickering). SO, do I ask for the 2 or the 5. This will be used as an all around camp knife. A little wood processing when necessary, camp chores, making stakes, cutting steaks, skinning frogs, rabbitts and deer. etc...

Sheaths do not matter because I will IMMEDIATELY replace the sheath no matter which one I get. I have handled both blades a little and like them both very much. I am just looking for some input from those that have actually USED BOTH blades in the woods.

Thanks in advance!

15 .. if your skinning the 2 and the 5 are more knife than you need. you can do ANY basic camp chore quite easily with the 15, aaand it excels at any sort of meat processing/skinning.
Imho the 15 is one of the best knives out there. It and the 16 are truly two of my favorite knives ever.

Get the 2 first. It's a fun beast. Beat it and love it. The 5 is sweet, and you will want it too;)

The infamous "which one should I buy next" question is posted on here many, many times. If you are looking at a BK2 or a BK5 next, you really have to look at the tasks you wish to perform. Looking at the tasks you listed, both Beckers can easily handle those tasks. In fact, every Becker can handle those tasks. But if you are looking for a camp knife, you should go with the BK5 "Magnum Camp", because camp knife is right in the name. I use my 5 more than any other Becker I own, and I have yet to be let down by it. At first I was scared that the narrower profile " by Becker standards" would cause the narrow edge to diminish quickly, but I was wrong. I can easily take wrist sized branches in one swipe. I even used it in the Beckerhead West gathering fire contest and reduced a length of 4 x 4 to all stages of kindling with no issues. After a length of heavy use, I did form small dings in the edge, but a few passes on the stone and a strapping cleared that right up.

Great guys...thanks for the input. I am sure that this will be only the FIRST of many beckers. I like the tweeners, but fo r this knife, I want a bigger blade.

Never used the 5 and so i shouldnt really keep typing..... but ill add my thoughts anyway The 5 camp knife and 2 CAMPanion seem very different but I love the BK2 its a beast check this out: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/839944-BK2-test-the-final-part-(LOTS-of-pictures

BUT--- I have the 11,13, 2 and 9 and honestly id rather either a larger or a smaller blade for almost every task over the 2, i love the 2 for its strength and size but its too big for cutting fishing line and slicing meat. not that it wont work but its too big to be comfortable at the task. And its too short for serious chopping like large firewood proccessing or brush clearing chores . chopping is do-able. the bk2 will chop, but the bk9 makes the work easier. I like showing off my BK2 but id rather use another knife when its time to work. my favorite and most used is my bk11. but i also have the bk14 and bk16 on the way as well and think the 16 will get alot of action time.

As for the BK5 i cant comment, never held it or used it but thats because i dont care for the look of it. so out of the 2 you suggested id go with the 2 but as far as the tasks you have listed i would suggest the bk16.

i dont own a 5 but i do own the 2 and everyones right its a beast and will do most anything you would ever need a knife too do.

The 2 tends to be everybody's first full-sized Becker, but if it was me, I'd go with the 5 first. The 2 is the ultimate survival knife; tough and nigh unbreakable. But the 5 works for every camp chore I've ever tried it with. It is light and nimble, and the choil lets you choke up really close to the edge for fine work. The edge is thinner than the 2's, and is easy to make razor sharp, even in the field.

But at the end of the day it doesn't matter which knife you choose, because either way you win. :D

This thread needs some pics.

Aaah, that's better.

Lets put it this way. I have both the 2 and 5 but; I have 2 5's!

Thought when I'm out camping I'll also carry both. I find that I'll go for the 5 most of the time and I'll grab at the 2 for some of the heavier tasks. Not that the 5 can't handle it; it's just sometimes I like the 2 over the 5. I will say that I do use the 5 more than the 2..........

I don't know man it's a tough call.....

Go for the 5!!!!! :D

If you get the 2, you'll want the 5.
If you get the 5, you'll want the 2.
Get the 5 first.

Go the 2 it was my 1st Becker and I now have got a collection (11,14,17,2,9) and soon a 5 will be added. The 2 is the knife in my collection that seems to get the most work.

If you get the 2, you'll want the 5.
If you get the 5, you'll want the 2.
Get the 5 first.

Exactly.:D
I have the 5 and it's one beauty of a beast. Now, I need a 2.

I'd say, based on the tasks you'll be doing, you should get a BK-5. It's the better slicer, but it can handle some wood processing. Of course, no heavy splitting/batoning like the BK-2, but it'll do.

I have had the 2 and it can do everything BUT does not do any one thing great. I would get a 5 for what u are wanting a knife for.

Disclaimer: these were just my thoughts, others may vary

As a first Becker I would go with the 2. It was my first Becker and I love it soooo much.
That's why I recommend it to everyone:D
