A buddy of mine is just getting into the 'outdoors'. He's a city boy but his current SO enjoys hiking and such. He wants to start doing some camping and I was thinking of buying him a nice fixed blade. My budget is $100, give or take.

I personally carry a SURVIVE! GSO04.1 when in the woods and have been looking at ESEE, BK&T, Fallkniven (The F1 is nice but he may have trouble with a convex grind), stuff like that.

So if someone were going to buy you a fixed blade for $100 to pair with your SAK, what would you pick and why?

Thanks.

ESEE Izula II. Small, light, comfortable, capable and tough as nails...

It's all I really need for an outdoorsy fixed blade (unless I'm doing some fishing--then I like a proper fillet knife.)

Good luck, OP! :)

I'd probably go with one of the smaller Himalayan Imports offerings - one of their AK Bowies, Villager knives, or maybe a 15" blemished model.

Good options so far. I did help a family member pick the BK-16 for his go to knife a while back. I like that one, and the Izula. I'm a huge Izula fan.

I know that Camillus is a bit of a bad word for some folks, but their USA-made Barbarian fixed blade might be worth considering. I bought one as my go-to outdoors knife, and my only regret is that I haven't had more opportunities to use it.

Becker BK16 with the micarta scales should be right at $100.

A Mora companion, or blackout with a nice kydex sheath should be way under budget as well.

I also own a Boker Plus Vox Rold and it is a quality knife but I prefer a Mk I or MK II over the Vox Rold.

I would choose an ESEE 3 or 4. I think with the warranty, you don't have to worry about breaking it. which means you can use it like it was made to be used. The 1095 is easy to maintain and it holds a good edge. Also, the sheath is one of the best stock sheaths you can get.

That JK Element looks nice. I'm reading up on the torture test now.

I would go with either an ESEE 3, an ESEE 4, or a Tops BOB knife! All are great knives.

If you want to check out a custom knife, look at Shaerks Knives. You can get a 'Little Mook' for less than a hundred. He does Wood/Micarta handles and Leather/Kydex sheaths.

How about something different like the JP Peltonen M07 Ranger knife.
