Help me buy a good whittling knife for a friend.

Yeah, there's not much to a good whittling knife- I've recently used a No. 8 opinel to make a spoon.
I've been carrying a number 6 that could easily be modified into a sheepsfoot/wharncliff and it'd probably make a primo carving knife.

All the above suggestions are great, and I like the 62 PC.

For the case seahorse, I only see truesharp as an option. Are cv seahorse whittlers available? And does it matter?

I would imagine the cv models are limited. I have noticed that tru sharp out numbers cv like 10-1.

Look at the Old Timer 240T, that is what I use when I butcher a piece of wood. The various blade shapes may be cheating, but it gets the job done. It cost about $25.00 on Amazon.

I prefer carbon steel. It takes a refined edge better than stainless. But I use stainless often as my favorite knife, the case 75 stockman, is stainless. I also sharpen it daily if I whittle with it.

The schrade USA old timer 34OT and 33ot are often used on my porch. For several years I used only the 34OT. The steel used in those is 1095 and it takes an amazingly keen edge. If one was to turn the sheepsfoot on the 34 into a wharnecliffe blade, it would be nearly perfect.

Those things being said, I’ll whittle with whatever I have. I’ve whittled with a box cutter before when that’s what was available. Match your project to your knifes ability.

Cheating would be cutting it out with a bandsaw and finishing it up with the knife. Not that I haven’t done a few spoons that way myself.
