I filled out the SS paperwork in July, before my 62nd birthday the end of that month. My first SS deposit came in September - and I celebrated by ordering a Wilson/CRK StarTac Umnumzaan. Fantastic knife - great hand fit in my medium+ hands. My BM 610 Rukus 'was' my pocketable bushcraft knife, having displaced my long favorite Buck 110, but this 'zaan is a real contender - as it is for a whittler, as well. I wanted a plain large Sebbie, none around, or a 'zaan - my only source for that locally was $400 + 9% s/t - $436 - the Wilson StarTac version was available - $429.95 with free s/h. Yeah, it looks neater, too!
For size comparison, here it is with my other framelock favorites:
I've fondled upscale Sebbies of both sizes - and a regular 'zaan - since my latest acquisition. I have the correct knife for me, although, inexplicably, I feel drawn to a plain small Sebbie - which should be about the size of the Buck 172 Mayo TNT above. Add to that the fact that there is a new small StarTac Sebbie and you can understand why my grandkids may have a slim Christmas this year!
Off topic. I don't know about the OP, but my 'early' retirement at 62 for SS this past summer follows by many years my retirement from the state system as a post-secondary teacher, an income not age/outside employment sensitive. I continued to work - self-employed - and lost lots of money in a failed business. UnAmerican, I know, but I financed my company's losses instead of 'going bankrupt' - by mortgaging my paid-off home. It will be mine again by January, I hope. Add to this some age-related medical problems which surfaced as my hatchday approached, and you get the picture re my 'early' retirement decission. Everyone is different.
