Got rats living under my mobile home. I was able to catch one with a standard rat trap. Since then they seem to be able to take the food without setting off the trap. :(

I even go so far as to take a piece of sausage and tie it to the trigger mechanism of the trap. They seem to be able to take the food despite this.

Any tricks or tips? Anyone with more experience than me?

I hate to poison them because I don't want their little rotting bodies under my house, nor do I want to crawl under there to fish them out. :barf:

aye use bait they cannot carry off. An Air rifle is also good for taking out rats if you place the bait where you can see it depends if it is legal to fire one where you are and if you are a good shot with one.

Peanut butter, oldest trick in the book. :)

I wholeheartedly agree!!! I caught seven  in a two week period with the peanut butter at my old house.

If that doesn't work, I hear they're partial to vodka

Personally, I'd rather keep the rats than get a CAT!!! ;)

I'll third peanut butter. Only thing that worked when I was trying to catch the raccoons that were getting into my garbage.

I have used glue traps with very good results, though insects and other small critters also get stuck on them.

slowly through the bushes
catsoft feet patrol the yard
rats and mice in mortal peril
from the humans' feline guard

never cross in open daylight
watch the shadow on the grass
hawks are also deadly danger
careful vermin quickly pass

once inside, the choicest treasure
placed inside a metal trap
lets the hungry rodent enter
shuts the heavy metal flap

still they flourish
no surprise
so many born
for each that dies

Peanut butter works. And you don't need a big glob. Just smear on a bit. You want 'em to have to lick it off of that trigger. And they will.

Somone told me that a glue trap is really effective-though the rat suffers terrible death. so watch out in case you have some rodent rights groups around.you might even end up on court for torturing rats :D .

Re-adjust the spring tension in the traps. Had to do that when we had feed corncobs hanging in the shop for the squirells and couldn't catch them for the same reason. Got them everytime after that and they were big. :barf: :barf: :barf:

A Jack Russell is what you want.

My Welsh terrier 20 years ago was the most efficient rat killing method I have ever seen.

By the way, dogs are much better at killing rats than cats.

How about a Rat Terrier?

If you don't have pets, could you try rat poison?
