I think im going to get a new folder. I was looking at Benchmade, but I can't decide which one. It will need to be your all purpose knife with around a 4 inch blade. I will use it for camping/backpacking,fishing, and probobly carry it every day for protection ect... All in all I am looking for a tough, quality, sharp knife.Any suggestions? Thanks alot

If you go Benchmade, check out the Pinnacle. It's a good all around knife with a tough lock. If you want to go quality, go Microtech! Check out the SOCOM Elite or even the L.C.C., although the blade is a bit under 4 inches. There are alot of good folders in the 4 inch range. If you want an inexpensive knife, check out the CRKT Crawford/Kasper or a Cold Steel Voyager if you're into lockbacks.

You didn't mention price range, so check out the ones el cid mentioned and don't forget to take a look at,
Benchmade AFCK (My personal favorite Benchmade)

Emerson Commander (WITH wave!)

CRKT M-16 series

Spyderco Police or Military are good picks too.

You should find something in there to fit your tastes and budget.

BTW, welcome to the forums!

Good choice on the benchmade. Definitely a company that stands behind their product. My personal favorite is my daily carry...a 910SBT Stryker. Lightening fast open...and smoooooooth too!

1. Large plain Sebenza
2. BM 710 Axis in M2 steel
3. Spyderco Military in CPM 440V
4. BM 750 Piniccle

GREAT knives all.

Sounds like the Spyderco Wegner to me.

Assuming you want to stick with Benchmade (a fine choice):

For general carry, which is 99.9% boxes/string/tape/bags/stuff in backyard/fingernails, and 0.1% defense purposes (God forbid):

1. 710 Axis, ATS-34
2. 800 AFCK, ATS-34
3. Pinnacle (forgot number).

Serrations are good if you don't know how to sharpen a knife yet. Just like a serrated kitchen knife that is actually pretty dull, they continue to rip/cut when dull. Serrations are good for ripping cuts into fibrous materials, like tough vines/branches.

I've found that as I got to be good and quick at resharpening, and as I got waaay too many folders (which means I always have a very sharp one to carry), my desire for serrations dropped precipitously.

M2 probably outperforms ATS-34 in edge holding and in toughness by a bit. Benchmade only sells it with Black T Coating I believe, because it's a carbon steel and will rust if not cared for reasonably.

Other vendors:
1. Reeve Sebenza if you have the money.
2. Spyderco Starmate 440V
2b. Spyderco Wegner
