Would the Pork Shank or the CABS be a better choice for a field/hunting knife? I EDC a 3.5 folder so I am looking for something slight larger in a straight blade.
I have a vintage howling rat but for what ever reason I never take it out

CABS is one of my favorite knives. Ever.

It is the most comfortable of all of the Bussekin, imo, and the most fitting for bushcraft-type work.

Pair it with a big chopper or an axe, and you'll be set for anything.

I love my pork shank!
Either would do the job just fine. Depends if you want choil or not.
That howling rat is going to waste.

one of the basic models

+1. Basic 5 would work well.

For something even more lightweight in INFI, my favorite is the S5LE (under .16" thick vs .25" thick for the B5). I especially like the shape and texture of the "mudder" style Res-C handle. The blade length is a very useful 5.25", especially when carrying a good folder.

Ban Tang removed the thumb ramp on the one below and did a complete re-grind to a significantly thinner edge than original. Features a zero convex primary grind, radiused spine, and Ban's signature "frost" finish...

I'd pick a CABS or RMD, with the S5LE, DPH right up there. If it wasn't too big, my favorite 5 is the BAe, but it's a lot heavier than the others.

It sounds like CABS may be it! I prefer no choil.
I like the looks of the ASH but it may be a little wide.

The CABS is a great field knife! It is just a tiny bit big compared to what I prefer, the handle is a little thin for my hands, and I wish the blade spine wasn't rounded, but I really do love it. My favorite Busse field knife is the BAD, so far.

Stay sharp,

Active Duty is a great way to go as well. I am gonna try out the new Anniversary Mean Street if I ever manage to get a deer this year.

I have to say that I would go with a Becker. I know that wasn't one of your choices, but that's my only choice for a hard user field knife. Not saying others aren't as good or better, because that depends on the end user. But for me it has to me a BK-? insert the number you wish based on your size requirements. I happen to choose the BK-7.

CABS! extremely functional for every day wherever you are, still one of my favorites ever.

........ or not...... ;)

Basic 4 is a good option for field / hunting as well. Maybe a bit more available at the moment than the Basic 5 and/or Scrapper 5 LE's.
