Guys, I am in the process of buying a ONE PIECE FIXED BLADE but which one?

Mountaineering, Shadow, Mark, Aviator; they almost look alike. How can you choose:confused:

Any advise welcome

I have a Mountaineer II and I like it very much. Just like the Sable IV, it has
no top guard. For utility purposes, a very good feature.

Hi jprice76

Since you have been eyeing the Sable IV forever can you tell me more about it?

Hi vanman,

Ok for utility purposes no top guard. What made you choose the Mountaineering over the Sable IV?

With the Chris Reeve's knives you first have to choose what type of point you want on you blade:
Spear Point: Project 1, Shadow I, III, & IV
Clip (Hunter's) Point: Project 2, Aviator, MkII & VI, Mountaineer I & II
?? Point: Nkonka, Sable I and IV

Then the next question is Size and then whether you want a double guard or a single guard. For example the Mountaineer II and the Mk VI are basically the same knife with the difference in guards and sheaths.

I personally have an Mk VI that I love. Great size and also I prefer the pancake sheaths to the pouch sheaths. Just my opinion of course!

Hi KnifeFury,

And you opinion is exactly what I need;)

You wouldn't append to know the pro and con for the type of points and the blade size would you?

Has for the guard, I learn from Vanman that no top guard is good for utility purposes. So that's one down.

With you guys help, in no time, I will have enought info to make a choice:)

Hi Scotch, hope the decision process is going well, I can see how it would be a tough one.

To answer your question: Of all the CRK FB I have always just really like the design of the Sable IV. I consider it the perfect length for a good camp and utility knife. I think the point design would be more useful over a clippoint or spearpoint for skinning game. As far as the guard goes, I consider the double guard more of a SD design and useful for thrusting or stabbing with the knife(obviously protecting against the chance of the hand slipping onto the blade) where the single guard is designed more for utility purposes, where you might be choking up on the knife to make different cuts in game or preparing food around camp, or even whittling on some wood around the campfire! I feel that the double guard would get in the way of some of these things, all of the good camp knives I have had over the years had a single guard. Also, the A2 tool steel will be ideal as a good hard use steel for camp use, just remember it can rust if not looked after properly. Anyhow, I'm basing all this on the fact that you may want a FB for camp purposes, if your intentions are different than none of this may apply to you. Damn, I think I just talked myself into finally ordering a Sable IV:D

Good luck w/ the hunt. No matter what CRK FB you choose I dont think you'll be dissapointed in it! Make sure to post which one you decide on!

Relative to blade type, I am not sure what the benefit of the "spear points" are -> ie what you would actually use that style of point for.

I agree, that I like the Sable series as well, but it looked to much like a kitchen knife for my personal taste, of course I think that is part of the functionality of it! My next CRK 1-piece probably would be a Sable (or a Project 2).

I also agree that no matter which one you buy you will be impressed!

Well Jprice76,

so far my decision process is getting a lot more difficult then I expected. If I had the budget for all my hobbies that would be it. Since I do not, the next thing is what am I doing to do with it?

I remember a post where the wife of the poster was asking him why does he need so many knifes?

It go me thinking, I do not have a FB blade and do I really need it? Hunting, fishing camping, hiking, survival? Hum is there an all "arounder" in the bunch. What about the pilot, the top of the blade has Multi-Purpose Serrations now that has to be useful yet none of you guys suggest it. There must be a reason?

Reeve made so many version of the thing he should have explained the purpose of each one it would have help me a lot. Chris why so many wonderful FB?:)

Your input is gladly noted and one thing is for sure you definitely did talked yourself into finally ordering a Sable IV. Go boy go Now before thinking messes everything up:D

KnifeFury,

Sable! you to hein;)

What do you think about the aviator and the Multi-Purpose Serrations?

Scotch

I have mixed feelings about serrations. First, how do you sharpen the type of serrations on the Aviator, they look similar to the serrations on the Ontario ASEK I have (although Chris Reeve might sharpen those as well when they refurbish the knife!)

For years I had a Spyderco Harpy (C08S - full serrated). It was a nice toy, but you did have to "saw" to get it to cut. About 6 months ago I bought a Spyderco Native (C41PBK) to have something else to carry. Razor sharp out of the box and cuts through 3/8" rope with no problem. What I learned: A sharp knife will out-perform serrations!

KnifeFury,

I just e-mail CRK to ask about how to sharpen the type of serrations on the Aviator. I am curious has if it is a wood saw or aluminum saw or in-between?

The link to PiterM was very informative and the picture where great. No wonder it got your attention. I wish I had one of his kydex sheath but got to have a knife first:o

Scotch

KnifeFury,

I already got my answer back for CRK, that's costumer service. " The saw back on the Aviator is not designed to be sharpened. It was created to cut a pilot out of a fiberglass fuselage or possible cut wood in a pinch. It is not able to cut meat or other tasks serrated knives do."

Now we know:)

Scotch

Scotch, I appreciate you sharing CRK's response :) .

I figured it was that, since they looked similar to my Ontario ASEK, refer to:
http://www.ontarioknife.com/asek.html

The ASEK is a neat toy, but as I mentioned the saw teeth on that looked similar to the Aviator. With the ASEK, I especially like the rubber coated handle - it has a nice feel to it (especially when you choke up on the handle, since the guard is rubber coated as well). Small package with many different cutting options.

Back to CRK's though! You have me looking into a Sable IV or a Project 2 now! Although it may have to wait until after Christmas.

Well gentlemen, to all of you who took the time to give your opinion in order to help me, I appreciate! My preference goes to the Mountaineer:)

Scotch

I vote for the Sable line too. They have the thickest points, by the way.
The Sable I is something to behold. I got one over a year ago and I still can't get over it.

It' be hard to stick to one only... but if you ask me - MK.VI would be my choice. Simply because I know what this knife can do... virtualy anything!
