Help me choose a whittler!

Here is another one.

Buck Creek Knives Carbon Whittler

http://www.knifecountryusa.com/stor...ket-knife-with-genuine-deer-stag-handles.html

All whittler patterns, all carbon steel.

I can't find a Case CV Whittler anywhere, but the Medium Stockman has to be almost the same. Am I right?

Is there really going to be much of a difference in any of these knives.

I know that people talk about Queen, Case and Boker in good terms as far as making quality knives. The others I have no idea about though.

I have a case cv whittler i use and it has held up very well and still serves me good.

I like a pen better than a spey for whittling.
The point gets places that the spey will not.

I guess I figured that I could use the wharncliffe or the large blade for what you are talking about and use the rounded point of the spey blade almost like a gouge if I want to hollow out an area.

Thoughts?

Be very careful using a spey tip as a gouge. Really good way to close a blade on your fingers, and with a nice thin, sharp blade like that, you'll be asking for stitches.

The spey shouldn't close on you as long as you're careful to use the belly for the scooping action of a gouge.

I agree it is something to be careful with, I still think it could come in handy though.

So in the end I decided on the Queen Whittler in Birds Eye Maple. I am sure the D2 will be fine. It may be a pain to reprofile for whittling, but once that is done I am sure it'll hold up great.

If I need a gouge I will use a gouge.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Here is the knife by the way.

though the queens are beautiful well made knives. I would stick with carbon blades. Case is usually quite acceptable on fit and finish. That Buck Creek with real stag looks like a good deal , however I am not familiar with their quality. Just buy a few of them and send me the ones you don't like!

I receently bought a Hen & Rooster stag whittler. I like the knife, but if I were going to use it for any kind of fine work, I'd have to look elsewhere. The blades were not sharp, and I had a heck of a time getting them that way because of the thickness. It's my EDC, but like I said I don't do any fine work with it.

F3X, I have the top one, a Boker 280 series in Grand Canyon bone. Very nice knife, and a very good bargain.

Can't comment on the other.

I was looking at the H&R because I think it had a flat grind with micro bevel or at least thats what I read, is it just thick? How is the F&F and action? My Queen wasn't sharp either but it is now :D

I'm not sure I can describe it, but it's just not tapered toward the edge. I got an edge on it, but it's not what I would consider a whittlin' edge.

Here's mt Schrade UH897 - great for small tasks, including some whittling. I find myself cutting plenty of fruit with it as well:

Thumbs up to Bill at cumberland knife works for getting the order processed and out. I ordered the knife on Thursday and it arrived on Saturday, regular Priority Mail shipping.

The Queen is a beautiful knife. Fit and finish are excellent. It did not come very sharp, and was not all that easy to get that way, but that is D2 for ya. It is shaving sharp now though, and assuming Queen does a decent job with their D2, it should stay that way for a while.

That said, I am quite happy with the purchase and would reccomend the Queen Whittler and Cumberland Knife Works to anybody who asked.

Edit:

Also of note, is that the pic on the site doesn't even come close to doing the birds eye maple scales justice. They are very nice looking.

Maybe you can post a good photo? The stock photos of the BEM make it look really, really bland.

Good choice on the Queen!

btw. I will post a shot of the Boker Grand Canyon Bone when it arrives.

My camera is on the fritz right now, so I probably won't post it soon. I am getting a new one sometime in the next few weeks though, and I'll see what I can do then.
