Help me choose an affordable pocketknife for a groomsmen gift..please

SAK; they're endlessly useful. I have and like a chive, but I'd give away any alox SAk first.

i still vote the Benchmite over the Chive or SAK (although a SAK ALOX bantam is really classy)

the chive has all that etching all over and its beadblasted

SAK seem a little too common and everyday.

the benchmite has a shiny satin finish, engravable blank on the backside
AND it LOCKS CLOSED probabbly a plus for non-knife ppl

Just got back from Sportsman's Warehouse.

Looked over everything they had and going by my $25 limit i narrowed it down to four knives

Spyderco Jester
Kershaw Vapor
KA-BAR Dozier (at least i think that was the name)
CRKT Wild Weasel

After I narrowed it down to those four I eliminated the Kershaw and the KA-BAR since the lady at the counter said they only had two of each on those knives and I needed five.

That left the spyderco and CRKT....From my research on here the past day it seems like spyderco is a higher end brand of knife but the only one they had in my price range (the jester) just seemed a bit too small. It was pretty cool looking but my pinky wouldn't even fit on the handle when holding it (although the thumb notch on top of the blade did keep it pretty secure in my hand). And the next size up in the spyderco prodcuts was like $37 (ie too much money).

That left the CRKT...the spring assist thing seemed to work well and it had a 154cm blade which seemed to be a respected steel from what I've read on here. It was also made in the USA which is a plus and the company is based in oregon (actually only like 15 minutes from my house) which is another little plus. I bought up the last five they had and as I was walking out the store I was kind of upset that they only had five left since I realized that I now want one now myself. I was kinda surprised that they retail for around $90...i guess they're discontinued or something since they sold them for $25.

Since doing research on here i gotta admit i've now got the itch to get a folding knife and I might just go back after my next paycheck and get one of those spyderco enduras or the pacific salt...i liked those two. It kinda sucks cause i also recently started training in MMA and that requires buying lots of gear (gloves, grappling shorts, mouthguard, etc) and the last thing my new bride to be wants is for me to get another hobby that requires buying things :)

Thanks to everyone for all the help!

Wow crkt with AO and 154cm for $25? News to me, I'll have to keep an eye out for this. Good find!

Since you're in oregon, you can always help yourself to a beautiful benchmade auto, if auto is your deal. Benchmade is another oregon company, they make excellent knives. If you look at them, try to get one with an axis lock, I like the bm 5500.

(and good luck this week!)

wow, i think you did extremely well for $25 a pop. I know if I was one of your groomsman i would be stoked to be given one of those. i have 154cm on a $130 knife, and I like it alot. great value here for what you paid...

most of crkt's cheaper knives are also made in taiwan. your pick is made in the U.S., so double score.

assisted opening will likely be a hit with your boys, so triple score.

very well done, i'm sure your gifts will be well recieved.

and now you say you want a pocket knife for yourself? haha, you better delete your bookmark to this forum and never come back...don't say i didn't warn you. anyway, i'm happy for you. i'm getting married next summer and i plan on giving pocket knives to my groomsmen also.

They were definately trying to get them out the door and clear way for something new from CRKT because on the little box there was a price sticker for $90 and then one for $50 put on top of it and then someone crossed out $50 and wrote in $25. Yeah the more I look at it, I'm like man i could put these things on ebay and sell them for $50-70 and make a nice little profit.

But that would be pretty rotten of me....I like the fact that my brother and friends are getting pretty nice knives..makes it more special of a gift. Woulda been nice if they'd of had six though so I coulda got one for myself.

I did like some of the Benchmade griptillian knives as well, they had one with a tanto blade that particularly caught my eye.....may have to get one of those and the Pacific Salt.....oh my poor poor bank account.

You did real well, they usually sell for much more than that.

Great gift...

B.

or you could sell them here, or trade them for something you want too. Nothing rotten with taking advantage of a deal.

He originally got them to give out to his groomsmen this week. I'd vote for selling them off for profit, but then you're back to your problem of what to get the groomsmen.

Seems to me he has had a stroke of luck in being able to give his groomsmen seriously excellent gifts at a modest price. That brings a blessing to his wedding worth more than the money involved. :)

Just got back from the reheasal dinner....they all loved them...they all commented on the quality and such and said that these just feel different then the pocket knives that they're use to carrying. They also couldn't stop opening them since I don't think any of them had used an AO knife before.

Yeah it would have been nice to sell for a profit (which probably would have been at least $125 after selling all five) but like znapschatz said I'm looking at it as a sign of good luck for the wedding/marriage. I was really close to buying them $5 cheapos from the mall on sunday and I'm glad I chose to wait until i researched stuff (which led me to find this website)...everything worked out good and in the process i think i've stumbled across a new hobby.

You got lucky. All the knife knuts in Colorado must have been quicker than me....I just called every sportsman's warehouse in Colorado, and none of them have any left. Good snag there Lucky Strike, congrats on your wedding, and may you have many good years with your wife.

usually the local shops are going to be a lot more expensive, I usually see a 30% to 200% markup in my local stores. may make sense to get exactly what you want an order from a place like www.newgraham.com and pay for overnight shipping.

other option is that walmart actually has good prices on a few quality little knives, and many walmarts carry buck and kershaw.

Reading these threads can be interesting. First off I am glad the groomsmen liked their gifts. I am into to traditonal slip joints and I checked out this site. It turns out they had a few Bokers on sale, including a red bone trapper for $26.99. I bought 3 different Bokers. So while the thread helps "Lucky Stike" it also helps other members sitting in the wings. Thankyou "soltstik". I now have a new source of knives and three Bokers coming my way.
