Hello helpful Busse fans,

I am looking to purchase a knife for my brother. He is a marine scientist and conducts research out of the Everglades and Australia. I was looking for input on what would be the best choice of knife for him. (Fixed blade) 6-7 inch blade for more slicing than chopping, but be able to do both sufficiently.

His uses would range from field work to out on a boat.

I looked into Mission knives for the corrosion factors.

His favorite knife of mine is a Reeves Pacific, but I am not so sure this would be the best choice.

I am leaning towards a Busse. So, from past experience I have found the Busse croud to be overly helpful and kind, that is why I come to you with this.

Thanks a bunch,

Kevin

BTW, if you need to know anything else just ask and I will answer. Not sure what else is necessary to know.

well i would hurry to get a NMSFNO, the coating will provide corrosion protection, and since the handle is g10 or micarta the water will not effect it either!
to the knife i would go with a machedcat kydex with slots for a thigh strap.

6 to 7 inches, good slicer but could be used for chopping in a pinch - and needs to be readily available? The perfect knife is for sale at the Busse Company Store right now. Go there and order a Skinny ASH1. You won't be sorry.

My first thought is a skinny ASH-1 from the company store: http://bussecompanystore.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PLST&Store_Code=BCS

I've got the ASH-1 LE which isn't much different, it's definitely one of my favourite all-round knives and a great slicer. Not the best chopper going but it can do the job reasonably well.

Here's mine: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=539120

and a Skinny: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=613901&highlight=skinny

Alternatively, there's the NMSFNO, currently available direct from Busse. More of a chopper with a longer, heavier blade. Good knife if that's what you need.

Then of course, there is the ultimate multi-use Busse, the SFNO. Recently released as an SE edition they are cropping up on the exchange now. Pricier than the previous options but certainly the best in my opinion. Here's mine, #33:

Hope this helps. Whichever Busse you choose, you can't really go wrong.

I would heartily recommend Marine Tuf-Cloth to protect the blades for their intended use. Infi is less rust-prone than many steels but still can and does. Wiping the blade down with Tuf-Cloth keeps the dreaded rust at bay.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! You are the most helpful, informative and gracious group I have met.

Here it is:

Skinny ASH-1 - Olive drab with magnum black canvas micarta.
ASH-1 Sheath - Kydex sheath fits Skinny ASH, black, by MashedCat.
Lanyard, Large, Jungle Camo, Olive/Black

Done!

I think this will be the best all around solution.

Thanks a bunch.

Now to go finish sharpening my FBMLE one of these days.

Perfect choice richstag ,,,, the skinny ash1 is thin enough to slice well and large enough to chop,,,,,, Reasonably priced too, including the sheath,,,,, and MashedCats sheaths fit great . I own the exact setup you described ,,,, and your brother will be very happy with it.

Thanks again EVERYONE!

I would individually respond, but that would take up a lot of space.

You were all very helpful in deciding and making me confident in my final choice.

Thanks again!!

+1

And the price is right.

Well well well,

The knife came in the mail today.

Not one of you could have been more right. This setup is perfect.

So perfect I ordered the same thing for myself.

I just could not help it.

I pulled it out and it just seemed perfect. And I have a few knives, most fancier and more expensive, but this one just fell into my hand and would not let go. I think it was made for my hand. Finally!

And it is sharp so thats good.

thanks again!!

Kevin

yes sir!
excellent choice...
mine is in a different color scheme, but fits me well just the same...
you and your brother WILL enjoy'em!

i would say a swamprat "ratmandu" {RMD} if it wasnt for the corrosion thing so anything similar to that in INFI steel.just my 2 cents.

Now, as a thank you to all of you fine people, a few pictures of my new knife. I would have done paired shots but my brother's is wrapped up waiting for his birthday....

so here are a few fun pics.... no studio setup like some of the pros on here, just having a little fun on a warm Sunday....
