I have been reading the forums for a few days now. Kept reading reviews but I keep getting drawn back to the Becker BK2-10 series.
I am a member of several other well known forums but I wont post there names yet cause I am not sure on the policy of that for this forum yet so I wont cross that line. But they are survival related to say the least.

I mainly do a lot of fishing. Essentially I would be looking for a knife to handle light duty baton work to start a small fire. Or small shelter if way off in the woods.
I think I am overloading on information. Maybe I just need to stop reading and buy a bk2 and be done with it.

Also I have never owned a knife with the durability that becker seems to offer. What will I need for sharpening. Almost everything I currently own is a smaller pocket knife.

Light duty batonning and a BK-2? Well, it can definitely handle heavy batoning with no problem at all. I found that the BK-2 is a bit large to take on the role of a main knife, backed up by smaller knife, folding saw and probably an axe or machete. There's a little gap in the Becker lineup, but it will be filled with the tweeners early 2012, just in time for the armageddon :D

I say go with the BK-2, it's a beast for sure and everyone should have one, that knife just gives you so many options for mods, it's not even funny.

Yep I agree with the German kid :)

If you like the 2, I say pick one up. I have a lot of higher end knives and just got a BK7 and am very happy with it and will undoubtably replace the duties of a few more expensive models I own.

Bk2 does more. Bk10 is a limited edition and does stuff well and can meet your needs. It is a downed pilots knife or "crewman". Bk10 if you think you will want one in the future and have the 150 to spend. Bk2 is around 60 bucks but will be around forever and ever amen

Definitely try a BK2!

I've had mine for 2 weeks and have loved every minute of it!

Sounds like Bk2 it is.

Now onto the sharpening. What kind of setup is good for this kind of metal.

I also love my BK2, but I am thinking maybe the BK5 might be a better choice for you.

The BK5 is a bit thinner, and is much better at KP type duties than the BK2, but still has the ability to work like a large knife, and build shelters and whatnot. The BK2 is well reguarded because of how versatile it is, but depending on what your main use for the knife would be, it might not be the BEST choice, even if it is still a very viable choice.

As far as sharpening goes, I have been using a Lansky and then some automotive wet/dry sand paper (2000 grit) to get things sharp. I will eventually get some nicer stones, but for now, this is working quite well (mostly with my budget).

Good luck, and let us know what you decide on :).

Sheesh guys, I'll get it,

Welcome to Bladeforums and the Becker forum!!! Glad you stopped in!!

Go with the BK2, its called the Campanion for a reason, its the one you want with you. I love mine, and haven't found another knife that can do what it can do, on all fronts.

As for sharpening, the 1095CV is pretty run of the mill stuff. You don't need any diamond hones, or anything, good ol' sharpenin' stones will do you just fine. I use a KME guide system, and it works well. You can go with the Lansky, I've used one for a long time, before I got the KME. If you want a Cadillac, get the EdgePro. Or just grab you a good benchstone, make sure to get a two sided one.

Once again, welcome, and I look forward to seeing some of your posts.

Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully in about 3 weeks I will have a nice new Becker bk2. After that I will be looking for a nice small half day pack to carry. I am thinking about something like one of the maxpedition sling packs. I wanna find one to try on. I am a big guy so hard to find something comfortable.
Mainly looking for a pack that I can carry a couple Plano fish tackles boxes as well as basic day pack gear.
Any recommendations for a nice lightweight half day style pack would be great.

When you get ready for a BK2 hit me up. I have an extra NEW BK2 I'll be selling soon at a great price.
