Help me decide - American made Forest Axe

When it comes to splitting wood these days, we cut a tree up into blocks and then insist on splitting every single one. My Pa was born in 1907 and back then they split everything with an axe. He said they only picked the straightest and best wood to split and anything that didn't look easy got left in the woods.

I'm leery of the Hudson Bay style. I think the very short eyes on these axes are hard on the hafts. I'd look for something where the ratio of bit length to eye length is a bit closer. On an HB it's almost 2:1. I'd stay closer to 1.5:1.

I'd look into a boy's axe. Some guys don't like them because of the word 'boys'. I guess it's a macho thing. Maybe their axe helps them with their self esteem.

Get the axe that does the job best. Set the ego aside.

This is a valid concern, and the exact reason that the Council and BMC Hudson bays have ribbed eyes. To help tighten the fit.

Hey Nickzdon
Do you know how many ribs are in the heads both vertically and horizontally?
I'd like to know
thanks

There are 4 vertical ribs, 2 on each side of the eye. Horizontal ribbing I'm not sure. I'll drop a dime on Council and find out.

So now that I have decided on the council tool boys axe I have looked at every local store with no luck. Nothing but Chinese steel. I really wanted to support a local business but I might have to get one from online. Also, I can only find the red model online.

I found mine at a local chainsaw shop.
I thought the red version was the only option. I just removed the red paint from mine to get the look I wanted.

The color doesnt really matter, its going to come off. But I thought I read somewhere the black was cheaper.
