help me decide RC-4/Bark River Gunny

My Bark Rivers are some of the few knives I've owned that the factory edge was just right.

Everyone, thank you very much for your opinions. This is exactly the kind of chat I was hoping for. There were too many good posts for me to respond to everyone individually but know that I saw your post and I'm going back to re-read them all again just for good measure.

At this time I am leaning toward the BR brand not to discount the advice of the folks who pointed out the value of the RC-4. I have to admit, it seems that the customer really gets a lot of knive and sheath for the money with that choice.

Some pointed out what should have been obvious to me and that's the fact than the RC-3 would be a closer match to the Gunny and the RC-4 would be the closer match or comparison to a knife like the BR Bravo-1 since the blade lengths are similar. Additionally I like the fact that the Bravo-1 comes with a kydex sheath which is pretty important to me since I work around water but I'm also sweating my tail off here in AZ during the summer.

I'm not sold on the idea that the two brands I'm looking at are in anyway "overpriced." The Fallkniven S1 seems to fall in right between the others price wise and they have a good reputation. The blade length on the S1 is just a bit too long but I'm going to have a look at some 4" Fallky's of comperable design before I pull the trigger on the Bark River.

I also appreciate the person who recommeneded that I take a look at the customs over in the exchange section, which I'm about to do right now. If I can find something that appeals to me there I'll certainly consider it!

At this point in time I guess I should change the title to RC-4 or Bravo-1 ?

Thank again for all the helpful comments.

Your´re welcome.

Here are some while carried:

For what it is worth, from what I can see, all of the pics of the Gunny in the sheath do not have the knife fully inserted.

The knife is TOUGH to get in that sheath at first, but it is well worth it. That sheath functions very much like kydex. That little inset of stitching is a cam that actually catches the self guard on the knife and locks it in place.

You can hold that sheath upside down and shake the knife over and over and it WILL NOT fall out. It is an amazing design.

From my experience, however, you do have to work to get it in the first time. Leave it in over night and in the morning you will be amazed at the working of the sheath.

it should look like this in the sheath (this is a lefty sheath, but you get the idea)

Ha!
Thanks for the advice guys!
It´s my first leather sheath, was just used to Kydex until now.

I aplied not enough force, to insert it deep enough...
Now the blade sits a little deeper, and it holds very tight in the sheath...

you never stop learning...

Good eye's, you two! It looks like the knife should be pushed in until the top edge is at the first pin. TheHunt sure appreciated the guidance there. :)

I think I'm going to order up the Bravo1. Can anyone point me toward a preferred BR dealer....any discounts available for BladeForum members?

Thanks.

I don't know about places with discounts on knives for Bladeforums members, but I'm a big fan of KnivesShipFree for BRKT (BF member okbohn above). DLT Trading Company and Crystal Falls Trading Company are good as well.

Wait a minute...Rat Cutlery & Bark River Overpriced?
Fällkniven no?

You kidding right?

Do you own one? Fallkniven's laminated steel is impressive.

I agree that the OP should at least consider the H1 or F1. The truth is, there are a lot of knives that would work - it comes down to personal preference in the end.

No. Rat and BRKT are non-laminated carbon steel. Get over the hype. Buy a ka-bar if you want something similar.

Non-laminated but less prone to chiping than Lam VG-10...RAT CUTLERY (ROWEN)1095 hold an edge nearly as long as Fällkniven VG-10.

BRK&T A2 hold an edge for a long long time.

I return the call (Get over the hype) lam VG-10 is not magic.

I have some Fällkniven,Bark River & Rat Cutlery and the most overpriced is Fallkniven with those rubber handles.

Agree or not.

just my 2 cents.

Gunny all the way! A2 steel convex edge uncoated

If you want a knife that cut Bark River is the way to go!

i have to agree. the brk&t is the one. its hard to beat the convex gind and a--2. its a marrige made in f^%$#!g heaven.:D

Have to agree with varulv here. Nothing against fallkniven, but the only noticable advantage of the VG10 is its corrosion resistance. None of the three are hard to maintain with minimal care. The handles on the Rats and Barkies are definately better. To get a fallkniven with a micarta handle just about doubles the price of the knife. You are better off buying the blank and having a maker put the handles on for you.
