Help me find a knife, clip+wharncliffe

Rishma, here's a couple of quick pics I took before heading out today of the Blackwood 77 (sorry it was a bit overcast). It'd have to have nigh on the best walk 'n' talk of any of my GECs. Can't remember what I paid, but it was probably around $100 off the exchange.

If you can find one and spare the extra coin, I highly recommend it. I don't know if it's an issue for you but the only reason I don't tend to carry it is the closed spine of the wharncliffe can be a little uncomfortable when gripping the knife tight, shaving hard eucalypt wood for campfire starting. I love the clip/wharnie configuration as well but I've gotten a bit fussy about how the spine of the closed blade feels.

Another option is to buy a clip/pen combo and grind the pen into a wharncliffe or coping blade. It's easy enough to do and expands your budget options considerably.

Ps-oh yeah!! Look at A.G. Russell! His sowbelly trapper is great, maybe too big is all. Actually just checked and it's 4 1/4" , so probably too big.

Thanks for this. I have never looked at AG Russell and I enjoyed it. Excellent looking knives for the $.

GEC also made their 48 pattern trapper with a clip and Wharncliffe.
It's a little bigger than what you're looking for at 3 7/8".

I find that #48 with a wharncliffe is wonderful, probably my favorite option. The lines and blade shape are very appealing. I may be making a mistake by limiting to 3.5", but the knife I am looking to replace is small, rode in the watch pocket. If I go for a larger knife, I think I will try to hunt down a #48.

great looking #77. thanks for posting. I see what you mean by how proud the wharncliffe and I know what you mean. I had a 2 blade hay'n helper that I bought to use hard, but the secondary was tough to use because of the sheepsfoot main. For now, I am going to stick with my budget and length criteria. I may just have to go with a stainless case model to see if this blade combo is really for me.

I really like your idea about grinding a pen into a wharncliffe. I had not considered it, but a modification is within my abilities. I am going to look around and see if I can find a suitable pattern.

Cheers

Nice one mate.

Let us know how you go - I'll be interested to see what you choose, and how your mod goes, if that's the path you decide to take.

The beauty of this method is not only are there tons of reasonably priced clip/pen jacks out there, but pen secondaries sit lower in the blade channel when closed than full length wharnies or sheepfoot blades, so that grip comfort factor is better. I don't know about you, but the most used part of straight edged blades for me is usually the tip and the front half of the edge up to the tip, so I don't feel you lose anything in having a shorter blade. If I want to do a power cut using the base of the blade or a sweeping cut, the clip blade main gets used.

I recently modded my Peanut in this way, and like it much more since doing that.

Good luck!

The 77 with wharncliffe/clip combo is an absolutely fantastic knife. The full size blade combo is extremely versatile. If you were using the clip for a long time I can see how the second blade would be a bit annoying but it's just such a gorgeous knife that I can look past that.

I must say, I have long thought the sawcut bone the best standard cover from GEC. Thanks for sharing.

This may help, too. GEC did a run of improved trappers for Mike Latham. Again, sold out, but if you can find one...

And it looks like it was not only a SFO. Here's a link to an old sales thread with a pic of a non-SFO model and its cap, so you can see the model number http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/sh....php?t=1431994

Those 48s are outstanding. I had not come across them in wharncliffe trapper search but found plenty now searching under improved trappers. Slightly longer than I was looking for but so close that I'll seek one out. Thank you.
