Help me find an ergonomic, axis lock BM

I picked up a mini Rukus as a first BM and I loved the axis lock but hated the bulk of that handle. I sold that and got a 950 Rift. It fits my hand great but those little cutouts on the G10 that make it look so badass also create sharp ridges along the top and bottom of the scales. When push cutting hard through cardboard those little ridges become very uncomfortable in the palm so the Rift too, is not for me.

What I need is a Benchmade with an axis lock that is comfortable in the hand (mediumish sized hands), <3.5" blade, no recurves/no tanto, tip up carry and nice scales (would like to avoid the plastic like on the Grip). I don't have much experience with many steels so I'm open to suggestions there. Any recommendations? Thanks. :)

I'd second the bone collector recommendation. While it won't be beating out Spyderco at the next ergonomics competition, it did feel good in my hand. And looked great too.

on the other hand, I thought the rukus felt great too so I don't know if I just have different hands/preferences

The 520 Presideo is my favorite of all folders for comfort. I have medium hands and the handle feels just right to me. No sharp spots and its nice and rounded and fills my palm. If you don't like aluminum handles then the Bone Collector is the same shape but with G10 scales. Both have good steel and simple, useful blade shapes.

The large Grip is very comfortable too but it is a bit noodly. The thing I like about all three is that they have some roundness to them, not just flat slabs.

I bought the BM 15020-1 Bone Collector first - then, I succumbed to the hype of others, and bought the 950 Rift. I am lukewarm re the Rift - but that Bone Collector is a keeper. It is two toned and sculpted - with nicely eased edges. It also has a pronounced thumbhole, probably good for even gloved hands. It is D2 instead of the Rift's 154CM. It also has jimped SS liners in the G10-covered thumb ramp - good for getting some oomph into your cuts. The Rift is open-backed; the B.C. is closed. It is more to my likes than the Rift.

My main gripe is Michael Waddell's 'Bone Collector' skull emblem on the blade - but I bet some Flitz/Semichrome and swabs - and elbow grease - would get rid of it. Nice knife!

You can sand down the sharp parts on the g10 Rift. Nutnfancy on youtube mentioned something about that.

I also recommend the BM 710.

I would say that the Benchmade 710 is one of the most comfortable benchamdes I have owned. I didn't like the little horn on the rift.. it was annoying and limited your gripping options. The 710 is great.. there is no particular way your hand has to be on the knife and you can grip in any fashion with no discomfort. The ares is also great... but long out of production? Why.. who knows, it was one of benchmade best selling models.

I have lg/xl sized hands and find the griptillian to be extremely comfortable to hold and use. The design of the handle makes it easy for one handed opening. I find my 710 to be a big narrow, but a very excellent knife.

On a related note, like another poster mentioned, you can sand down or dremmel with buffing wheel uncomfortable edges on the handle. I did that with a SOG Ihave, and it is a pleasure to hold now.

The Bone Collector is more like the Presidio than the the Griptilian's. Only difference is G-10 (BC) vs. aluminum (Presidio).

Thanks guys. The bone collector looks nice but I wish it had a thumbstud. Does anybody have experience with the 940?

Love my 940.. not sure if it's the most ergonomic, but it is comfortable and packs a big blade in a slim and classy package.

I like the 940 design, but have handled a few and don't find the aluminum scales comfortable to hold.

I made a post here asking about modifying the sharp edges on the scales of the Rift and was advised that it's feasible. Only thing is that the G10 is nasty stuff if fine particles of it get airborne and you inhale them. In other words, it's a hazard to sand it. Best bet is to sand it under water to keep the particles from flying about and getting into your lungs.

?? Well it wasn´t that dusty and that hard to round the corners on a 806D2. I suppose that is a comparable thing, isn´t it?

The G10 was kept in the sandpaper.

I found it pretty easy. But that´s maybe because the sacles of the 806 are a line.

Give the 741 Onslaught a try. Very nice in the hand IMO.

Or, the M390 805 still has a few available I think.

I have a BM 940. I can't say enough good thing about it. It is my EDC, go to knife. I have had it for a year plus and it has never let me down. I had a 950 but didn't like how "tall" it was. The 940 is the perfect EDC IMHO. Granted I will carry my 913 every now and then but when I do I long for the 940.
