I used to EDC a Junkyard Dumpster Mutt. Never cared much for folders. I want to pocket carry now, something that will be used for utility mainly. I have M.S. for 18 years, & my fine motor skills are affected.

In my county, I can't pocket carry a 3" or larger blade.

I'm having trouble finding a blade under 3", with a 4.5"+ handle.
I would like a blade that's knurled on the chollie & the top where I can put my thumb.

A Spyderco Battlestation is the closest I have found, with its 2.97" blade, even smaller cutting surface, but it lacks the knurling at the top.

Any suggestions & links would be appreciated. Thank you for reading my thread.

I only carry 3" or shorter blades. I used to own a Hinderer 3" XM-18 and I think it would be perfect for you, but I understand nowadays the 3" model is hard to find. Search on it and see if you like it. Then you can start a WTB thread. You may have to be a paid member.

I don't think a 3 inch hinderer would be that good for someone who has difficulty with fine motor skills. They're very thin and have a lot of lock bar tension so deployment would be hard. I would suggest a mini griptilian, the handle isn't 4.5 inches but its fairly fat compared to the rest of the knife which might make it easier to use.

I also own a mini-Grip but did not think the scales are large enough for him.

Here are some photos of the 3" Hinderer and the mini-Grip with custom scales (but you can certainly use the regular scales). I obviously like blue scales.
I am 67 years old and had no problem with the Hinderer, I used it and changed the scales myself. But I also recommend the Ritter Mini-Grip if the handle is large enough for you. You can obviously customize either knife.

The 4.5 inch handle is the other issue - makes sense given your requirements though.
One consideration is to find a knife you really like (with appropriate sized handle), then send it for a regrind. They can take off as much length as needed to stay under 3 inches.
Also - most people who do regrinds can also do jimping (what I think you mean by knurled?). So you can add this aftermarket if the battlestation fits all your other needs.

Can you tell I am really starting to appreciate after-market mods? :D

Get the Emerson cqc 14 I think it's called. It's the stubby emerson. It has a full sized handle but a shorter blade. It might not be the 14 actually. But look for the emerson stubby.

After researching your suggestions, for my tastes, it's basically down to CQC-14 snubby vs Spyderco Battalion.

I plan on removing the clip, & I think the SCo will be safer floating around in pocket. I'll do what foofie & find someone who could ad some jimping if I need more on the thumb.

But, the CQC-14 seems so much more substantial with a larger more aggressive grip.

I was just about to post this:

Have you considered an auto knife? In some states like the state I live in if you have a legitimate reason you can apply to carry an auto knife. You have a one button deployment solution and the same for closing knife.

Svord Peasent Knife might work for you . Has around a three inch blade, big comfy handle, and is easy to open and close.

Happy, the Launch 5 is a possibility.

Jstrange, Svord Peasent Knife is 7.3" closed. I'll probably pick one up for tool box, as well as nostalgia reasons.

Whp, I have many Delica's. Most need a regrind because they are well used, & I remember the tip broke off 1 or 2 blades. I almost forgot my history with Spyderco's. That lead me to fixed blades (Busse family) in the fist place. But I needed to pry, I don't have that need now.

Does bladeshq or Kifecenter deal/budge on their prices, or have Christmas sales?

A Spyderco Delica has a 4.25" handle. I have big, thick hands and this works for me. There is a Kahr version that has a shorter blade, as well.
A Spyderco Caly 3.5 meets your requirements. But you would need to re-profile the point a bit to get under 3" as it is 3.4" or so from the factory.
Another suggestion would be to buy a Spyderco Endura and have someone shorten the blade.
It is just impossible to improve upon the hole for ease of opening.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, a Spyderco Dice or Domino might suit you. Both have beefy handles, although the Site's is just over 4". I am a pretty big guy and it's a solid four-finger grip for me. The Domino is about 15% larger.

I just found the Spyderco Battlestation for $119.99 with a 10% holiday sale for $107.99 delivered. I just had to take it.

Maybe I'll find a Christmas sale & get a CQC-14 stubby & a Launch 5 as a stocking stuffer for myself as well.

What really sold me on this one, is the jimping on the cholie makes it difficult to cut myself when I close the blade.

Thanks guys... I'll update when I cut myself. :)

The Delica Kahr model looks good, but for $80 plus...
I can take my two Delicas with broken tips & make a version of the Kahr model. For my needs, it will work.
